Rugby League vs Union

There are two codes of rugby: rugby union and rugby league. Both sports share the same basic rules, have matches that last 80 minutes and use a similar-shaped oval ball. The main difference between the two codes is that rugby union is played by 15 players per team, while rugby union is played by 13 players per team.

Rugby Union

Rugby union has grown from being a sport that originated in Great Britain and Ireland in 1845 into one that is popular all around the world.

In addition to England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, rugby union is also very popular in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, France and, in more recent years, Italy, Georgia, Japan and Uruguay.

The most famous rugby union tournament is the Rugby World Cup, which takes place every four years. The biggest tournament in Europe is the Six Nations, which features England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France and Italy and takes place annually. The biggest tournament in the Southern Hemisphere is the Rugby Championship, which also takes place annually. Formerly known as the Tri Nations, the competition features Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

There are also domestic leagues all over the world, with Premiership Rugby the top division in England.

Rugby League

Rugby League originated in Yorkshire in 1895 as a result of the split with the Rugby Football Union. While the game remains popular in the north of England, it is also a popular game globally, especially in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, France, Tonga, Fiji and Samoa.

The biggest international tournament in rugby league is the Rugby League World Cup, which takes place every four years. The biggest club competitions, meanwhile, are the Super League in Europe and the National Rugby League (NRL) in Australia.

How to Bet on Rugby

In terms of how to bet on rugby, there are two types of rugby betting: match betting and outright betting.

Match Betting

Match betting covers everything you can bet on during a game, with bets placed either pre-match (before the game has started) or in-play (once the game has started).

Whether it is rugby union or rugby league, there are loads of match betting markets for every single rugby match, with some of the most popular ones including:

  • Win/Draw/Win
  • Over/Under Total Points
  • First Try Scorer
  • Anytime Try Scorer
  • Winning Margin
  • Handicap Betting
  • Draw No Bet

Outright Betting

Outright betting covers everything that will happen over the course of a competition, with some of the most popular betting markets including:

  • Outright Winner
  • Top Points Scorer
  • Top Try Scorer

Live Betting on Rugby

Live betting on rugby, also known as in-play betting, is one of the most exciting ways to bet on rugby.

In-play betting is when you bet on a match in real time, meaning the live odds change as the action unfolds.

Regular rugby betting markets are still available in-play, but there are also specific markets that are unique to in-play betting, including:

  • Next Team To Score
  • Next Try Scorer

How Are Rugby Betting Odds Calculated?

Rugby betting odds are calculated on the probability of something happening.

For example, the odds of Wales winning the Six Nations are longer than the odds of England winning the Six Nations. That is because the probability of Wales winning the Six Nations is much lower than the probability of England winning the Six Nations.

If Wales win the 2023 Six Nations after you placed a £10 bet on them to do so at 16/1, you would win £160. But if England win the 2023 Six Nations after you placed a £10 bet on them to do so at 5/1, you would win £50.
