Premier League Top Scorer Betting: Haaland favourite

Manchester City’s Erling Haaland was the favourite at the start of the season. The Norwegian has a phenomenal scoring record throughout his career to date and rattled in 36 league goals last season to take the Golden Boot. Despite being out of action for a period of time midway through the season Haaland tops the charts again. However, his former teammate, Cole Palmer of Chelsea, moved recently moved level after a four-goal blast against Everton, before Haaland was on target at the weekend against Nottingham Forest to go back into the outright lead.

Palmer, who has had an excellent season at Chelsea, remains in contention. And Haaland’s phenomenal scoring rate is also being challenged this season with Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak currently bettering his minutes per goal ratio.

Premier League Top Scorer Betting: Main contenders

We look at the leading contenders for the Premier League golden boot:

Erling Haaland – Manchester City

Haaland remains the favourite to win the golden boot. Manchester City are bidding to become the first team to win four consecutive English top flight titles and, despite a Champions League exit against Real Madrid, where Haaland was a peripheral figure over the two legs, City are making and taking a whole host of chances in the league and the Norway International is notching his fair share.

Cole Palmer – Chelsea

You would have been quoted extremely high odds had you bet on Palmer to win the Premier League goalscoring charts at the beginning of the season. Prior to Palmer’s switch to West London he had never scored in the Premier League. The 21-year-old has also contributed nine assists and has a number of other impressive statistics. He has a shot accuracy of 64%, bettering Haaland, and 31% goal conversion.

The numbers for Palmer, along with the quality of his performances have been highly impressive. Operating either as a wide forward cutting in from the right or as a number 10, he has got into some great positions and converted. He is also one of the most reliable penalty takers in the division. The bookies expect Palmer to fall short, partly due to him not being an out and out striker and partly due to the quality of the likes of Haaland and Isak, who have both missed time with injury.

Ollie Watkins – Aston Villa

Villa have enjoyed a superb season to date, as has Watkins. The England international has banged in 19 goals and has contributed 12 assists. While his minutes per goal ratio and other numbers are not quite as spectacular as some of his rivals, he has proved durable, clocking up 33 league appearances to date. If he continues this form in the run-in then the golden boot is a possibility.

Dominic Solanke – Bournemouth

Solankle has had a fine season to date, with his 18 goals and all round play being major factors in Bournemouth’s comfortable position in mid table heading into the final stretch of the season. While he could well top 20 league goals, when you look at his stats you would feel that, with the greatest respect, topping the scoring charts at the end of the campaign looks unlikely.

Mohamed Salah – Liverpool

Another contender who has missed time with injury. Salah was in superb form until he picked up a hamstring injury which effectively ruled him out of the AFCON, and had this not been the case he may have been right at the top of the charts. He hasn’t quite looked at his sharpest since returning from the injury, and he started on the bench against West Ham at the weekend. Not all appeared well between Salah and Reds boss Jurgen Klopp at the London Stadium, however, the Egyptian has the quality and the experience and you wouldn’t bet against him getting back into the scoring groove.

Alexander Isak – Newcastle United

Despite rarely being unavailable with injury in his Real Sociadad days, Isak has been plagued with groin trouble since moving to Tyneside. However, the Swedish international has a superb goals to games ratio with Newcastle and, since the international break especially, he has been in superb scoring form, with the quality of his all round game being highly impressive too. Isak has a superb minutes to goal ratio, and has a superb 68% shot accuracy. Added to which he has a 36% goal conversion record, the best out of the contenders. He could well top 20 league goals this season after bagging 19 goals in 25 appearances, however, may just fall short of top spot at the end of the season. However, if he can stay fit next season he could well be a serious contender.
