San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers boast a star studded roster and they have been the team to beat in the NFC all season. They began with five straight wins and, along with the Philadelphia Eagles, were the last undefeated teams remaining,[2] the 49ers lost to the Cleveland Browns in Week 6,[3] their first of 3 consecutive losses[4] heading into their bye week. Week 6 saw a defeat to Cleveland Browns, however, they got back to winning ways and win over their NFC West rival, the Seattle Seahawks, coupled with the Green Bay Packers’ loss to the New York Giants, say them become the first team to earn their place in the playoffs in week 14. The following week the 49ers secured the NFC West and a win in Week 17 over the Washington Commanders, combined with the Lions and the Eagles losing, saw the 49ers clinch the number one seed of the NFC for the first time since 2019.

After a close 24–21 win in the Divisional Playoffs against the Green Bay Packers, the 49ers advanced to the NFC Championship Game for the fourth time in five seasons.

In the Championship Game the Detroit Lions, a team that has never made it to the Super Bowl, stunned five-time champions San Francisco by taking a 24-7 lead at halftime. However, the 49ers mounted a remarkable comeback, scoring 17 points in a dramatic eight-minute period to level the game. With less than 10 minutes remaining, they surged ahead for the first time, ultimately clinching a 34-31 victory.

The victory propelled the 49ers into a Super Bowl rematch against the Chiefs, reminiscent of Super Bowl 54, where Kansas City emerged victorious with a 31-20 win in Miami.

The 49ers finished the season in the top 10 in multiple offensive and defensive categories. On offense, they finished with 491 points scored, which was third most in the league and the second most points scored in franchise history (behind the 1994 team who scored 505 points).[ They would also finish second in the league in total offense with 398.4 yards per game, which included finishing fourth in pass yards per game (257.9) and third in rush yards per game (140.5). They would also set an NFL record by becoming the first team in league history to have four players with over 1,000 scrimmage yards, with Deebo Samuel (1,085), George Kittle (1,022), Christian McCaffrey (2,023) and Brandon Aiyuk (1,317). On defense, the 49ers finished third in the league in scoring defense, giving up just 17.5 point per game and finished first in the league with 22 interceptions, level with the Chicago Bears.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs, reigning champions, overcame the Baltimore Ravens, winning 17-10 in a hard-fought match to earn their fourth Super Bowl appearance in five years.

The Chiefs, are aiming to be the first team to win consecutive Super Bowls since the New England Patriots in 2003 and 2004 and the first to win three out of five championships since the Patriots’ titles in 2014, 2016, and 2018. While they failed to improve on their 14–3 record from the 2022 season, they clinched their eleventh consecutive winning season, becoming division champions for the eighth consecutive season. In the playoffs, the made their sixth consecutive AFC Championship Game appearance, where their victory over the Ravens set up the February 11 clash against the 49ers.

However, the 49ers mounted a remarkable comeback, scoring 17 points in a dramatic eight-minute period to level the game. With less than 10 minutes remaining, they surged ahead for the first time, ultimately clinching a 34-31 victory.

This victory propels the 49ers into a Super Bowl rematch against the Chiefs, reminiscent of Super Bowl 54, where Kansas City emerged victorious with a 31-20 win in Miami.

Chiefs – 49ers stats – Head to head

Statistics are something you can stare at endlessly, especially when it comes to the NFL where many pundits resort to a lot of numbers to get a good picture of the situation before the game. At Betting.com we have compiled some things that may be of interest:

Chiefsvs49ers
14-0-6Results 2023/2414-0-5
22.1Scoring Average (Offensive)28.9
16.8Scoring Average (Defensive)18.4
362.8Total yards407.1
254.5Passing yards267.4
108.3Rushing yards139.7
2.3Touchdowns per game3.58

As you can see in the table above, the 49ers offense has been clearly better than the Chiefs. 28.9 points compared to 22.1. In contrast, Kansas City has allowed far fewer points, 16.8 against the 49ers’ 18.4. In number of yards per game, the 49ers are around 407 yards, while the Chiefs average a much lower 362.8. In both the passing game and the running game, the 49ers are better. In the running game, the difference is over 30 points on average, which is what stands out the most.

Looking at the statistics, a victory clearly speaks more for the 49ers, but then the Chiefs players have a routine that few have when it comes to the Super Bowl. Patrick Mahomes is making his fourth appearance in these contexts while 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has much less experience. While Purdy has impressed greatly, there is enormous pressure on his shoulders. Will he handle the pressure?

Of the 49ers’ 19 games, 11 have gone below the line of 47.5 points, while Kansas City’s games have a record of 20, being 15 under and only 5 over. With these stats in mind, an underplay here would definitely be tempting. However, the previous Super Bowl meeting between the teams ended over this line: 31-20.

The Chiefs are not a team that has produced a lot of points during the current season. In the regular season, they were only 15th best in the entire NFL and only on three occasions have they scored more than 30 points in a game. Against the Ravens, they scored 17 points, but it was enough as the team only allowed 10 at the same time.

The San Fransisco 49ers only managed to scrape together 7 points in the first half against the Lions, but then it really rattled and in the end it was 34 points for Kyle Shanahan’s gang. At Pinnacle, they have set the bar at 24-25 points in the Super Bowl for the 49ers. Statistically speaking, it should be able to go the way, only five of 19 games have gone under 24.5 points this season.

Other odds Super Bowl

Running with the ball as a quarterback is something that happens quite often, but neither Mahomes nor Purdy are expected to go long distances.

Another interesting market is the Super Bowl MVP, the favourite is Mahomes ahead of Purdy. Mahomes gives 2.30. After the quarterbacks we find the 49ers running back McCaffrey.

There is also the possibility to bet on various specials. These specials can partly be about the players in the respective teams but also about things that happen around the match and during the popular half-time entertainment. A classic that some betting companies offer is bets on which colour energy drink the winning team will pour on their head coach!

Prediction

This is an incredibly close one to call. The 49ers, under the head coach/general manager combination of Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch. have probably produced the best quality football and have probably shown the most consistency throughout the season, with McCaffrey favourite to be named most valuable offensive player. However, the Chiefs, inspired by reigning MVP, quarterback Mahomes, are a formidable side and have plenty of experience in their ranks from the previous five years. In terms of winning Super Bowls they have plenty of players who know what it takes and, in Andy Reid, a successful and experienced head coach in his 11th year in charge.

We are predicting a close match. Retaining the Super Bowl is an incredibly difficult task and we think it will be a bridge too far for the Chiefs with the 49ers current quality and consistency to win out over the Chiefs’ Super Bowl experience. 49ers to win.

Other tips

Bosa to make at least one sack – 49ers Defensive end Nick Bosa played a big part in the victory against the Lions by making two sacks. While Mahomes had an impressive streak of avoiding sacks and turnovers in the playoffs, last week he was sacked twice by the Ravens.

Putting pressure on the quarterback is a key focus for Steve Wilks’ unit. The 49ers defense has faced challenges during the playoffs, allowing an average of 386 total yards per game. Bosa, determined to be a game winner, has an impressive record with 10 sacks in 11 playoff games. After previously sacking Mahomes in one Super Bowl game, Bosa is aiming to repeat the two-sack feat this time as well. At least one sack for Bosa is priced at 4/5 at SpreadEx.

+0.5 Chiefs at halftime – Given Purdy’s inexperience, it is possible that the Chiefs can take advantage of this especially in the beginning of the match. 8/11 at SpreadEx.
