How our experts choose the best sites to bet on the Tour de France

Cycling is generally a niche market for spectators and punters but for the Tour de France things are different. It is the most prestigious cycling event in the world and it attracts a lot of attention and a lot of punters. Bookies will, therefore, attempt to make their offerings attractive with a raft of publicity and promos, making it hard to choose between similar betting sites.

Chris Sampson: The best Tour de France betting sites will offer competitive odds and promos such as odds boosts. Given the nature of the event I feel that a good in-play section is important and I like to see a bookmaker get their outright betting options posted early.

Compare the best Tour de France betting sites of 2024

While cycling, in general, doesn’t have the view figures or the amount of bettors as football, tennis or horse racing, an event like the Tour de France can prove to be an exception. Therefore bookies will put together packages to draw in punters. Here is a table to help you compare the leading Tour de France betting sites:

How to choose the best site for you have done the initial groundwork to discover the best Tour de France betting sites in the UK. Choosing a bookmaker is a personal choice, though, so it is important to do some research yourself prior to making a final call.

Here are seven things to keep in mind:

  1. Check for licences: Safety is vital when betting online. The only way to have confidence in the safety of your financial information is by betting on licensed sites.
  2. Compare welcome offers: You can get off to a good start with the right welcome offer. Read the terms to check it fits with your betting habits.
  3. Search for Tour de France odds: See how easy it is to access their Tour de France odds. Scroll through to find how many markets are available and potentially compare the prices with their rivals.
  4. Look up payment methods: Research which payment methods are offered. You want to make sure you avoid any hidden fees and can quickly withdraw your winnings.
  5. Read some reviews: Reputation matters in the betting industry. Learning what others think of a bookmaker can be very useful.
  6. Get the app: Download their app on your preferred device. A good mobile betting experience is key.
  7. Sign up: Once you think you have settled on a bookmaker, it is time to trial their sign-up process. First impressions can tell you a lot.

Betting on Tour de France explained

The first bicycle is thought to have been invented in 1817. Of course, cycling has changed massively since then, with new innovations constantly being released. It is a sport with immense variety.

Tour de France winner odds are available at the best cycling betting sites months in advance. These odds will change depending on form over the months and weeks leading into the race.

Search around for statistics and race history when trying to make your Tour de France picks. Form should always be taken into account.

Types of Tour de France  bets

You can enjoy a whole host of different bets at the Tour de France.

Race winner

The race winner market is the most common when betting on the Tour de France. You simply back the rider you fancy to win the race overall and your bet pays out if they finish first.

Each-way betting is a means of gaining some insurance compared to backing a rider to win the race. Betting each-way is effectively splitting the wager into separate bets. Cycling each-way punts often pay out for the top three spots. In the Tour de France bookies will often offer more places.

Stage winner

The best Tour de France  betting sites will allow you to bet on who will win a specific stage of the race.  There are 21 stages at the Tour de France and, while each stage is different, there are 21 opportunities to back a stage winner, be it a sprinter or a climber.

Just like you might have seen in other sports, matchup betting is a choice between two riders. You simply choose which rider you fancy to finish higher in the stage or the race overall.

Outright Winner Nationality

This is a simple bet where you need to predict the nationality of the race’s winner, i.e. French, British, Spanish, American etc. You do not need to specify the winning rider with this bet, only their nationality, so if there are numerous riders from one nation, a victory from any one of them would see you win your bet.

Points Winner

This is a bet on who will win the Green or Points Jersey, which is awarded to the rider who accumulates the most points in stage finishes and intermediate sprints. All you need to do here is predict who the recipient of this prize will be for the bet to pay out.

Top Three

Slightly similar to an each-way bet in other sports, this is a good option if you’d prefer to bet on a cyclist to place at the top rather than win outright. Your bet will win if your selection finishes among the top three contestants at the end of the race.

Top Ten

This is the same type of bet as above but extended to the top ten finishers. So, as before, your bet will be a winner so long as the nominated rider is among the top ten positions.

Team betting

You can bet on which team will come out on top over the course of the race. You can also bet on who will be the best rider on a particular team.

Climber’s Classification

These odds predict who will win the Polka Dot or Climber’s Jersey, obtained by accumulating the most points on mountaintop finishes and King of the Mountains sectors. The overall winner can sometimes win this too.

 Tour de France betting strategies

It is worth committing time to building your Tour de France betting strategy. You need to be up to date with the latest news across the sport, have a good understanding of rider strengths and weaknesses, and understand the history of the stages/the event. You need to find information on current form and look at the cyclists who are aiming to challenge for the overall title. For stage winners you need to look at sprinters or hill specialists who will be aiming for specific stage victories.

Get to know more about the Tour de France to bet smarter

The first Tour de France took place in 1903, as part of an idea from sports journalists Henri Desgrange and George Lefèvre in an effort to improve circulation of their sports newspaper. The race was held over six stages, covering 2428 km as the riders left Paris for Lyon and biking down to Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux and Nantes before returning to Paris. Maurice Garin won that first Tour in front of 20,000 Parisians, and L’Auto’s circulation quadrupled.

While that inaugural race was a success, the second edition was disastrous, as cheats began catching trains and sabotaging each other’s bicycles. Despite this, over the following years the event grew, the race doubled in length and the addition of  mountain stages saw the event become something like it is today.

The famous yellow jersey that is awarded to the winners of the Tour de France was introduced by Desgrange in 1919, with the colour being the same as that of the newspaper that he produced. It also allowed spectators to identify the leading cyclists more clearly.

Eugene Christophe was the first person to wear the yellow jersey on 18th July 1919.
