Wigan and Catalans set for Old Trafford showpiece

Wigan Warriors and Catalans Dragons go head to head at Old Trafford in one of rugby league’s biggest occasion, the Super League Grand Final.

Super League play-offs 2023 results and fixtures

Play-off Eliminators: Hull Kingston Rovers 20-6 Leigh Leopards, St Helens 16-8 Warrington Wolves.

Semi-finals: Catalans Dragons 12-6 St Helens, Wigan Warriors 26-12 Hull Kingston Rovers.

Grand Final: Wigan Warriors vs Catalans Dragons at Old Trafford (Saturday, October 14 – 6pm).

Wigan Warriors

Wigan, who secured the League Leaders’ Shield in the regular season, go into the Grand Final on the back of nine successive wins in all competitions. This will be the 12th time that Wigan have contested the Grand Final and their first at Old Trafford since 2018. Head coach Matt Peet has already brought Challenge Cup success to his hometown club and now looks to land the Super League title in only his second season in charge. Key players for the Warriors include newly crowned Man of Steel Bevan French, Jai Field, Harry Smith and Abbas Miski.

The Warriors beat Hull KR 42-12 in the semi-final to book their place and will go into the final full of confidence, looking to land their fifth Super League title.

Catalans Dragons

Catalans ended St Helen’s hopes of a record extending fifth Super League win in a row with a 12-6 victory in their semi-final. Star man for the Dragons was former Wigan favourite Sam Tomkins who will face his old side in the final. Steve McNamara’s side, who finished second in the table behind Wigan in the regular season, will be bidding for their first Super League triumph in their second Grand Final.

French side Catalans made history by becoming the first overseas side to win the Challenge Cup in 2018 and, after a narrow defeat to Saints in the 2021 Grand Final, will hope to go one better and make more history.

Wigan Warriors vs Catalans Dragons: Head-to-head record

Previous meetings in 2023: March 9 – Wigan Warriors 10-18 Catalans Dragons; June 3 – Wigan 22-46 Catalans Dragons (Magic Weekend in Newcastle); August 26 – Catalans Dragons 0-34 Wigan Warriors.

All-time Super League record: Wigan Warriors won 31, Catalans Dragons won 13, drawn 1.

Prediction

Wigan go into the match as favourites on the back of a nine match winning run. Although the Warriors topped the table in the regular season, they finished level on points with second places Catalans and third placed St Helens. So the match should be a tough encounter, however, we feel that the Warriors will emerge victorious.

At the time of writing, Betfred have Wigan at 8/13, Catalans at 7/5 with a draw after 80 minutes 18/1.
