Fans vent frustration as Messi and Suarez miss out with injury

Angry fans in Hong Kong voiced their frustration during a pre-season friendly match involving Inter Miami, as superstar Lionel Messi remained benched due to injury.

The highly anticipated encounter, which saw Inter Miami triumph 4-1 against a local League XI, drew nearly 40,000 spectators. However, the absence of Messi, who was nursing a hamstring injury, left fans discontented. Their discontent was palpable through chants demanding refunds and drowning out a speech by Inter co-owner David Beckham.

The Hong Kong government expressed its disappointment, highlighting that Messi was contractually obligated to play at least 45 minutes. Kevin Yeung, Hong Kong’s secretary for culture, sports, and tourism, emphasised that officials were repeatedly assured of Messi’s participation, only to be informed of his inability to play just 10 minutes before the match concluded.

Efforts to salvage the situation, such as having Messi interact with fans or receive the trophy, were futile. The government’s major sports events committee (MSEC) demanded an explanation from the organisers, Tatler Asia, who had received substantial funding for the event.

Tatler Asia, in response, expressed regret and announced the withdrawal of their application for a government grant, citing Messi’s absence. Despite fans paying upwards of 1,000 Hong Kong dollars per ticket, the absence of Messi and Luis Suarez, sidelined due to a knee injury, intensified the disappointment.

The crowd’s frustration peaked during the match, with chants for Messi growing louder as he watched from the bench. Even Beckham faced jeers when attempting to thank supporters post-match.

Organisers clarified that they were unaware of Messi and Suarez’s unavailability before kick-off, deferring to the decisions made by the players’ medical teams.

Inter Miami’s manager, Gerardo Martino, defended the decision, stressing the risks associated with Messi and Suarez playing despite the fans’ disappointment.
