So it has been 40 years since a host country succeeded in the feat of securing an European Championship gold on home soil. Germany will be looking to join that exclusive club this summer.

How the Euro 2020 final played out

Some punters have a habit of glancing back in the history books, but rarely do they delve more than one championship back. So we are looking back to the final of Euro 2020. The tournaement was played in 2021 due to COVID. The final took place on 11 July 2021 at the iconic Wembley Stadium in London with England taking on Italy. After 90 intense and nerve-wracking minutes, the match ended 1-1, With no further goals in extra-time the match went to a penalty shoot-out.

Despite England leading 2-1 after two rounds of penalties, it was Italy who would trumph. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who was later awarded the player of the tournament award, was the hero of the hour as the Italians gained their second European Championship. Incidently Euro 2020 was the first time a goalkeeper received the player of the tournament award.
