- Blues in talks with Rooney after Eustace exit
- Ex England star has recently left DC United
- City currently sixth in Championship
Birmingham City are currently in talks with former England, Everton and Manchester United star Wayne Rooney as they search for a new manager. This decision follows the surprising departure of John Eustace on Monday morning, despite the team’s sixth-place standing in the Championship. The club’s new owners, Knighthead Capital, are eager to implement a change in direction, emphasising a “no fear” playing style.
Rooney available after DC United exit
Rooney, the former boss of Derby County, has become available after parting ways with MLS club DC United over the weekend. He states that this decision was made without a specific future role in mind. There is optimism surrounding Rooney’s potential appointment, with the belief that he could bring significant attention to the club. It is rumoured that upon his appointment, the 37-year-old may bring former teammates Ashley Cole and John O’Shea on board as part of his coaching staff.
On Tuesday night, it was confirmed that assistant head coaches Keith Downing and Matt Gardiner have both departed the club in the wake of Eustace’s exit.
Meanwhile Eustace has been mentioned in connection with the vacancy at Rangers after the departure of Michael Beale last week.
Betting Implications
The appointment of Rooney as Birmingham City’s manager would be a development closely watched by fans, pundits and sports bettors alike. If and when Rooney takes over bettors need to monitor the progress of the team to see if they are worth backing for promotion.
At the time of writing bet365 have Blues as 50/1 outsiders to win the EFL Championship and 16/1 to be promoted to the Premier League. It will be interesting to see if those odds shorten if Rooney’s appointment is confirmed and, should he get off to a good start, how quickly they come down.
