The three-way battle  for the Premier League title, between Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool is one of the closest and most exciting for years. The three contenders have shown incredible levels of consistency over the season, however, matchweek 34 saw a potentially significant switch of momentum as Arsenal and Liverpool both lost at home, to Aston Villa and Crystal Palace respectively, while Manchester City racked up a 5-1 victory over Luton Town.

Since then Arsenal have got back to winning ways with a solid away win over Wolves and a comprehensive triumph over London rivals Chelsea. Liverpool looked to have got back on track with a win at Fulham, however, crashed to defeat against Everton in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park. Due to their FA Cup commitments, both Arsenal and Liverpool had played two matches by the time City returned to Premier League action at Brighton, following their win over Luton. This ramped up the pressure, however City, who also suffered a frustrating exit from the Champions League on penalties against Real Madrid, swept the Seagulls aside, leaving them a point behind leaders Arsenal with a game in hand going into the weekend.

The weekend saw the trend of the previous week continue, with Liverpool dropping points again, this time in a 2-2 draw away at West Ham United. Arsenal raced into a 3-0 lead away to Tottenham Hotspur. However, Spurs pegged their rivals back to 3-2 and the Gunners endured a nervous finish as they held out for the three points. Manchester City then went to fourth bottom Nottingham Forest and came away with a 2-1 win.

Arsenal lead he table with 80 points from 35 games, Pep Guardiola’s City, chasing a double having progressed to the FA Cup final, are in second with 79 points from 34 matches and Liverpool are a further four points back with 74 points from 35 games, leaving them effectively out of the race. CIty remain in the driving seat and the bookies have them as strong favourites. Arsenal’s odds remain at 9/4, however, Liverpool’s defeat in the Merseyside derby and failure to come away from West Ham with all three points has all but ended thier challenge in the view of the bookies and most pundits.

Prediction

Manchester City’s destiny is in their own hands, sitting a point off the top with a game in hand. City have made a habit of coming strong in the closing stages of the season in the Guardiola era and the majority of their squad have been in this situation before and are adept at handling the pressure and picking up the wins.

Arsenal look back to form, but the Gunners are relying on City dropping points. EFL Cup winners Liverpool have dropped points in recent weeks and are, effectively, out of the race.

We think that City will prevail and will go on to become the first team to win the English top flight four years in succession.
