Georgia – Euro 2024 overview

Georgia as a football nation has a relatively short but interesting history. They have never qualified for either the World Cup or, before this year, the Euros. Euro 2024 will be their first major tournament. They have still had some relative success at international level, including wins over the likes of Spain and Croatia.

Some of the most prominent players from Georgia include Mikheil Meskhi, a legend in Georgian football, who played in the 1950s and 60s and is considered one of the best footballers in the country’s history. Another legendary player for Georgia is Georgi Kinkladze, a creative midfielder who made a name for himself in the 1990s for his technical excellence, playing for clubs such as Manchester City and Ajax.

Making Euro 2024 is clearly Georgia’s biggest success in men’s football and it gives them hope of making the 2026 World Cup.

For Georgia, the Euros is about learning, but at the same time we must remember that they have upset bigger nations in the past and further advancement from Group F, where they face Portugal , the Czech Republic and Turkey , does not seem completely out of the question.

How Georgia qualified for Euro 2024

Although Georgia only finished fourth in its European Championship qualifying group, the nation will play in its first ever European Championship finals. Via the “lifeline” Nations League playoff, Georgia went all the way. In playoff path C, Willy Sagnol’s team defeated Luxembourg 2-0 in the semis before knocking out Greece on penalties in the final.

Georgia’s Euro 2024 squad

Many of the players in Georgia’s Euro 2024 squad are relatively unknown. There are a few players who are playing in leagues such as La Liga , Serie A and Ligue 1 . The highest profile player in the Georgian team is Napoli’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Kvaratskhelia has been on the radar of several clubs and it is not certain that he will remain in Naples who he helped win the Scudetti in 2023. Goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili of Valencia is another key man.

Looking at the group, if Georgia perform well they could make the knockout phase. However, they will have to perform at their maximum if they are to do so.

Key players

Here we have listed three of the key players in the Georgian Euro 2024 squad:

  • Khvicha Kvaratskhelia – The 23-year-old Napoli player is arguably the biggest star in the Georgian national team right now. Kvaratskhelia, who has played at Napoli since 2022, excels as a skilled distributor but also has the ability to score important goals. With his game intelligence and determination, Kvaratskhelia has established himself as one of the most exciting talents in Europe.
  • Guram Kashia – Team captain with great experience who could be extremely valuable in Georgia’s first major championship. The 36-year-old defender plays for SK Slovan Bratislava. He has previously played in clubs such as Vitesse and San Jose Earthquakes.
  • Giorgi Chakvetadze – Chakvetadze plays for Watford in the Championship and is a young, talented, creative midfielder with good technique. Went to Gent as an 18-year-old where he managed 50 competitive matches with a couple of loan spells to Hamburg, Slovan Bratislava and Watford before a permanent transfer to the Hornets in 2024.

Georgia Odds at Euro 2024

Georgia, as Euro 2024’s lowest ranked team, unsurprisingly are rated as outsiders by the bookmakers. You can get high odds on them winning the tournament or the group and, indeed, making it out of the group. Given Georgia’s ranking and lack of experience of tournament football these odds are fair. However, progress from the group is not, in our opinion, impossible.
