Leading candidates to win the golden boot at Euro 2024

We have picked out the players who we think will be the main contenders to win the golden boot at Euro 2024. Here is our list of the main favourites:

Harry Kane – England

England’s record scorer Kane will captain the side at Euro 2024. With an impressive track record under his belt, Kane will be aiming to lead England to their first major silverware since 1966. In the 2018 World Cup finals, Kane won the golden boot at the 2018 World Cup and his goalscoring record at club level is also highly impressive.

The move to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich has seen his goalscoring go from strength to strength. In Euro 2020, although Kane played well, England’s goals came from other sources. You would imagine that the former Spurs forward will want to make is mark with goals as well as performances this time round.

Kylian Mbappe – France

The blisteringly quick, skillful goal machine that is Kylian Mbappé is expected to play a major role for a French side who are among the tournament favourites at Euro 2024. He is also expected to figure highly in the race for the European Football Championship’s golden boot. The PSG player, who is set to join Real Madrid this summer, is a true superstar and has deomnstrated his goalscoring credentiqals year after year. In the 2022 World Cup, Mbappé won the golden boot with a total of eight goals.

Like Kane, Mbappé surprisingly went goalless at Euro 2020. However, this is not the norm for the man tipped to overtake Olivier Giroud as the French national team’s all time leading scorer. Given the fact that France are likely to reach the latter stages it would be a surprise if Mbappe didn’t figure amongst the tournament’s leading marksmen.

Cristiano Ronaldo – Portugal

He may be 38-years-old, but Ronaldo cannot be ruled out of the race to be top scorer at the Euros. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid legend continues to exceed expectations and continues to bang in the goals in both club and international football.

As the top goalscorer in European Championship history, “CR7” secured the golden boot at Euro 2020. The football phenomenon, considered by many to be one of the world’s best of all time, may not play with quite the same intensity as he did in his prime, but he is still one of the best goalscorers in the world. A key man in Portugal’s flawless qualifying campaign, Ronaldo will be ready for the Euros where he will bid to secure the golden boot for the second time in a row.

Romelu Lukaku – Belgium

The European Championship’s top scorer in the qualifiers, Romelu Lukaku, is another in the line of possible winners of the golden boot at the Euros. His physical presence and strength make him a difficult opponent for defenders, while his finishing ability and keen sense of goal make him a reliable goalscorer.

Despite his size, Lukaku is also quick and agile. He is clearly a hot candidate for the European Championship’s golden shoe!

Álvaro Morata – Spain

Atletico Madrid star Álvaro Morata will be looking to erase the memories of Euro 2020, where he missed a crucial penalty in the semi-final against Italy.

Morata has shown more confidence of late and both his performances and his goal output for La Roja have improved since the 2022 World Cup. He is playing well for his club Atlético Madrid and an in form Morata in a Spain side capable of mounting a serious challenge will be a genuine contender for the golden boot at Euro 2024.

Niclas Füllkrug – Germany

Germany have been going through something of a transitional phase and they will be hoping that a home tournament will give them sufficient impetus to turn the tide. The bookies fancy the hosts to perform better and Germany are seeking to put early exits at the World Cup and the Euros behind them. They will hope that late developer Niclas Füllkrug can provide a much-needed boost.

Despite his relatively late debut in the German national team, the Dortmund player’s impressive goal average has made him a player to watch, especially with the support of the home crowd.

Rasmus Höjlund – Denmark

Manchester United star Rasmus Höjlund was Denmark’s top scorer in the European Championship qualifiers with four goals. The 21-year-old, who made his debut in the Danish national team in 2022, is making his first appearance in the finals of the Euros and expectations for the talented striker are high among the Danes.

Höjlund’s technical skill and ball control enable him to create scoring chances both for himself and for his teammates. In the national team, he has averaged over 0.5 goals per game, whether he will reach Jon Dahl Tomasson’s goal record of 52 goals remains to be seen, but if Höjlund continues at the same pace as he started, then it is a distinct possibility.

Aleksandar Mitrovic – Serbia

Serbia striker Aleksandar Mitrovic is a consistent goalscorer in club and international football. At Fulham, Mitrovic hit an impressive 97 goals in 173 games and for the national team shirt the goal average is well over 0.5 goals per game.

The 29-year-old has been Serbia’s best goalscorer of all time for a long time, and now the question is whether he can also compete for the golden boot at Euro 2024. If Serbia go deep into the tournament, Mitrovic could be a bit of a dark horse for the top scorer accolade.

Joselu – Spain

Real Madrid striker Joselu is a geniune late developer. He made his debut for La Roja as a 32-year-old in 2023 and since then he has established himself as an important part of the squad. The former Stoke City and Newcastle United forward has always been good in the air and a willing worker, but over the last few seasons his ability to get into goalscoring positions and his finishing have improved.

His physical presence and ability to win aerial duels make him dangerous in the penalty area and make him an exellent focal point upfront. In the European Championship qualifiers, Joselu scored for four goals and contributed two assists. If he is played from the start in the Euros, he will be an interesting outside bet to win the golden boot.

Best scorers in the European Championship of all time

Over the years, the Euros has provided a platform for a whole host of high quality goalscorers. Frenchman Michel Platini, a footballer of the highet order as well as a regular on the scoresheet, scored nine goals at Euro 1984, which fired him into the lead as the tournament’s all-time top scorer.

But Platini’s total was passed during Euro 2020 where Ronaldo scored five goals, taking his overall tally to 14.

Third on the list are Antoine Griezmann of France and Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer of England, with seven goals each. Griezmann, who is in the French squad at Euro 2024, has a good chance of moving up to second place. To reach Platini’s total, two goals or more are required. In joint fifth place we find Zlatan Ibrahimovic, with six goals.
