Germany: Euro 2024 Overview
Germany are currently undergoing something of a transitional phase and were disappointed to exit the 2022 World Cup in the group stages. The start of Julian Nagelsmann’s reign has featured friendly defeats against Turkey and Austria, but they have quality players in the shape of İlkay Gündoğan, Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala, Leroy Sané Antonio Rudiger, Joshua Kimmich, Thomas Muller, and Toni Kroos and with home advantage should be strong contenders.
Germany are in Group A alongside Scotland, Hungary and Switzerland. Hosting a tournament can be a double edged sword, due to the pressure of expectation. Germany face a challenging start against a buoyant Scotland side who will be looking to cause an upset against a side who will be under pressure to deliver both results and performances as host nation. Germany are historically strong contenders in tournaments and the weight of expectation will be there, both from the point of view of a host nation and as a traditional international heavyweight. Going into the tournament they have received a boost in the form of experienced midfielder Kroos making himself available for selection. The Real Madrid star had retired from international football after Euro 2020.
All things being equal, Germany should qualify from the group and they are more than capable of having a run deep into the tournament. For further details on Euro 2024 as a whole check out our tournament preview.
How Germany qualified for the Euros
Germany qualified for Euro 2024 as the host nation.
Germany Euro 2024 Squad
Gündoğan, Musiala, Sané, Rudiger, Kimmich, Muller, and Kroos all featured in Euro 2020, where they exited in the last 16. Goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen missed that tournament, played in 2021 due to COVID, with injury, however, he was a member of the Euro 2016 Squad. Muller and Kroos both were in the squad for Euro 2012, having been involved with the senior national team since 2010. There is a mix of some of the traditional cornerstones of German football, such as tactical intelligence, reliability and technical proficiency, along with some flair and invention. There are young players along with experienced hands. If Nagelsmann finds the right balance this could be an interesting team to watch and one which may be worth at least an each-way bet on. Indications are that Nagelsmann’s side could line-up in a 4-2-2-2 formation.
Key Players
Ter Stegan is a top class goalkeeper on his day and Rudiger is a solid presence at the back. Gündoğan can dictate play and Wirtz, Musiala and Sané provide invention and goals. The experience provided by Muller and Kroos will be invaluable.
Germany Odds at Euro 2024
At the time of writing, Germany are 6/1 third favourites to win the tournament with bet365, behind England and France and ahead of Spain. They are 2/5 favourites to win Group A. I feel that the bookies have got things right. Germany have a talented squad and home advantage. Arguably England and France are slightly better, both player for player and in terms of depth.
Once you have selected your bookie, look at the outright odds and then you can decide whether you want to back Germany to win the tournament o maybe go for an each-way bet. However, if there odds come down any further this will not be worthwhile. There will also be prices available on Group A, and whether Germany will win the group or can qualify.
As well as bet365 we recommend the following online bookmakers for Euro 2024 wagers.
