Belgium – Euro2024 Overview

Belgium’s golden generation of players could be nearing the end of their careers, however with captain Kevin de Bruyne back from injury, and potentially coming into the tournament fresh, they could be in with a chance at Euro 2024. Many feel that this could be the last chance for this group of players to win something.

Belgium finished in third place in 1972, but it should be noted that there were only four teams was only four and the structure somewhat different from today. Eight years later in Italy the number of teams had doubled to eight and this time Belgium made it to the final where West Germany proved too strong and won 2-1. Since then, Belgium have not managed to reach the last four in the Euros. In 1984 and 2000 it was a group stage exit and in the last two championships in 2016 and 2020 they went out in the quarter finals.

This year, hopes are high that Belgium can make a serious tilt at the title. It would definately be a surprise if they fail to make it out of the group. While all teams must be respected, Group E is, on paper, one of the easier groups. Belgian national football team are high among the fans and certainly it would be a bigger fiasco if Belgium did not advance from the group stage. The group you have ended up in is hardly one of the tougher ones on paper. In Group E, where Belgium has been drawn, they face Romania , Slovakia and Ukraine.

How Belgium qualified for Euro2024

Belgium clinched first place in European Championship qualifying Group F ahead of Austria, Sweden, Azerbaijan and Estonia. Their eight matches saw them claim 20 points with six wins and two draws. The only dropped points for Belgium came against Austria and Sweden at home.  Roma’s Romelu Lukaku was Belgium’s top scorer with 14 goals. This total saw Lukaku confirmed as the top scorer in the qualifiers.

Belgium Euro 2024 squad

Belgium travel to Germany for Euro 2024 with a strong squad and it will be interesting to see how they perform under their new national coach, Domenico Tedesco. The Belgians are without Thibaut Courtois, one of the best goalkeepers in the world, due to cruciate ligament injury.

The return of De Bruyne from injury is most welcome. When on form, the Manchester City man is one of the best in the world. De Bruyne, as well as being a fantastic attacking midfielder is also a leader who can inspire his teammates and make those around him better.

Belgium continue to focus on possession. The players aim to dominate possession and control the pace of the match, This proved successful in the Euro 2024 qualifiers and against teams like Romania and Slovakia, there is a good chance of success again.

Belgium are great exponents of set-pieces and carry an aerial threat. They are flexible and adaptable and are a side nobody will want to draw in the knockout stages.

Key players

Here we have listed three of the key players in the Belgian Euro 2024 squad:

  • Kevin De Bruyne – “KDB” is considered one of the best midfielders in the world. With incredible levels of perception, vision, passing ability and shooting accuracy, he is a key player for both Belgium and Manchester City. De Bruyne has won several individual awards and has been a central figure in successful teams both domestically and internationally. If Belgium make it to the semifinals or beyond De Bruyne could be in the running for player of the tournament.
  • Romelu Lukaku – Scored an impressive 14 goals in Euro qualifying, which was more than half of Belgium’s total. He is a strong, fast and direct striker who is excellent in the air and can be relied upon to put chances away. Should Belgium reach the semifinals or the final, the Lukaku could be in the running for the golden boot.
  • Jan Vertonghen – One of the most experienced players in the Belgian squad for Euro 2024. With an impressive career both at club level for Tottenham Hotspur and internationally for the Belgium national team, Vertonghen has established himself as a reliable and respected defender in world football. The 37-year-old is probably making his last major championship and what would be better than ending with a win in the Euros? Vertonghen has played as a central defender in a back four, a left sided centreback in a three and as a left back.

Belgium Odds at Euro 2024

Since 2025 Belgium have been comfortably in the top 10 in the FIFA rankings. The highlight was probably third place in the 2018 World Cup. Some big players are heading towards the latter stages of their careers and, although Belgium have remained a top side after losing the likes of Vincent Kompany and Eden Hazard, some of their other top stars may prove difficult to replace.

Belgium are sixth favourites with bet365 and, looking across the range of bookies, they are invariably sixth or seventh. The bookies are offering very short odds on them winning Group E and on qualifying for the knockout stages. Belgium are a very good side, however, on paper there are stronger squads out there. A quarter final berth is expected and further progress is seen as being possible.
