The US Masters
The US Masters is the first of golf’s four Major Championships to take place in a calendar year. Unlike the other Majors, where a number of different venues are used, the Masters always takes place at the same place, the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.
US Masters: History and tradition
The Masters Tournament also known as the US Masters or The Masters) was founded by Bobby Jones, an amateur golf champion, and investment banker Clifford Roberts. Jones acquired a former plant nursery in 1930 and co-designed Augusta National with course architect Alister MacKenzie. First played in 1934, the Masters is an official money event on the PGA Tour, the European Tour, and the Japan Golf Tour. The field of players is smaller than those of the other major championships. This is because it is an invitational event, held by the Augusta National Golf Club.
At the very outset, Roberts wanted to call the tournament The Masters, however, he faced opposition from Jones, who felt that the name was a little pretentious and presumptuous. Although Roberts unofficially referred to the tournament as the Masters, it was called the Augusta National Invitation Tournament. Jones, however, eventially yielded and, in 1939, the event officially became the Masters Tournament, a name which remains to this day.
The tournament has a number of traditions. Since the 1949 Masters, a green jacket has been awarded to the champion, who must return it to the clubhouse one year after his victory. There is also the Champions Dinner, held on the Tuesday before each Masters, which is exclusively open to past champions and designated committee members of the Augusta National. Since 1960, a social contest on the club’s par-3 course has been played the day before the first round. In 1963 a tradition of a past champion, or sometimes another celebrated golfer, hitting a ceremonial tee shot on the morning of the first round to begin play was started. These have included Fred McLeod, Jock Hutchinson, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Elder, Gary Player and Tom Watson.
US Masters: Most successful players
Nicklaus has the most Masters victories, racking up six between 1963 and 1986. Tiger Woods is the next most successful with five titles between 1997 and 2019. Palmer won four between 1958 and 1964. Following on from Woods there are a number of the game’s greats tied on five wins. Jimmy Demaret, Sam Snead, Gary Player, Nick Faldo, and Phil Mickelson have all won five Masters titles. Player, from South Africa, became the first non-American winner of the tournament in 1961. Spaniard Seve Ballesteros, who was victorioius in 1980 and again two years later in 1983 was the second non American and the first European to triumph.

The Augusta National
Based in Augusta, Georgia, The Augusta National Golf Club was founded by Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts. As stated earlier, the course was designed by Jones and Alister MacKenzie and opened for play in 1933. It has been modified many times by a number of different architects. Changes include greens being reshaped and, on occasion, completely re-designed, bunkers have being added, water hazards have been extended, and new tee boxes have been added. Down the years, hundreds of trees have been planted, and several mounds have been installed.
Since 1934, the club has played host to the annual Masters Tournament, for which it is famous. In 2019, the course started to co-host the Augusta National Women’s Amateur with Champions Retreat Golf Club.

The US Masters 2024
The US Masters takes place from Thursday April 11 until Sunday April 14, 2024.
Scottie Scheffler is riding a wave of momentum as he gears up for the 2024 Masters, despite narrowly missing out on a victory in the Texas Children’s Houston Open. As the frontrunner with the bookies, he is eyeing his second green jacket at Augusta National Golf Course. Scheffler’s recent triumphs, notably his consecutive wins at The Players Championship and the Arnold Palmer Invitational, solidify his position as the favourite among bettors.
Yet, he faces formidable competition, including Brooks Koepka, who came agonisingly close to clinching his first green jacket last year. Koepka’s performance in the 2023 Masters demonstrated his talent, although he was not helped by the weather conditions, as he lost momentum after a lengthy rain delay. With his resilience and skill, Koepka emerges as a formidable challenger in this year’s tournament. Rory McIlroy and defending champion Jon Rahm are also tipped to provide a strong challenge, however, if Rahm was to retain his title he would join an exclusive club of elite golfers, with Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods being the only players to have achieved this.
The Masters always delivers in terms of excitement and suspense, and with players of Scheffler and Koepka’s calibre in contention, spectators and bettors can anticipate a thrilling spectacle on the greens of Augusta.
Scheffler is the 7/2 favourite, while Rory McIlroy is next at 10/ and Rahm is 12/1 in the latest 2024 Masters odds from BetVictor. Victor Hovland, Koepka, Jordan Spieth and Xander Schauffele are at 20/1.
US Masters 2024: Main contenders
Scottie Scheffler
Scheffler was struggling with his putting for the latter half of the 2023 PGA Tour season. He was limited to only two wins for the calendar year, both of which came before the Masters. In 2024, Scheffler has recently claimed back-to-back wins in the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship, to match his total of last year.
The 2022 Masters champion has a total of eight victories since February 2022. His odds of winning his second green jacket in three years are already as low as 7/2 representing an implied win probability of 22.2%.
Scheffler tied for second in the Houston Open, but his putting was once again the problem during the final round. Apart from the odd issue with the putter resurfacing, his game looks in great shape heading into the Masters.
Rory McIlroy
McIlroy played in last week’s Valero Texas Open as a warm-up for the Masters and finished third in a strong field, showing that could be coming into form in time for Augusta.
According to the analysts, McIlroy is scoring highly in a number of key stats and is playing really well off the tee. This has not been reflected in his finishes on the PGA Tour, where he has a highest position of T-19 in 2024. However, with greater consistency with his irons and his wedge, the Northern Irishman could be a major contender at the Augusta National. In a bid to do this McIlroy has sought help from Butch Harmon, Tiger Woods’ former coach. The Northern Irishman is bidding to win his first major since his win in the US PGA in 2014 and, in doing so, join an exclusive club of golfers to have won all four majors in their career.
Jon Rahm
Defending champion Rahm is third among the Masters favourites, however, his progress is a little trickier to assess since his departure to LIV Golf. However, Rahm has finished in the top 10 of all five LIV events in 2024. He tied for fourth in Miami last week.
Brooks Koepka
Koepka has had a mixed time so far this year on the LIV tour. However, the five-time Major began 2023 relatively slowly and came close to winning last year in Augusta. Arguably the rain delay came at the wrong time for Koepka last year, taking away his momentum. His win in the US PGA last year proves that he still has the quality to win Majors. He will be a threat. Koepka finished well down the field in Miami, however, bettors maybe shouldn’t read too much into this. Koepka often saved his best form for the Majors when on the PGA Tour and this trend has continued since he defected to LIV.

Odds on Tiger Woods to win the Masters in 2024
Tiger Woods has endured a difficult time of late, however, his talent and his record at the Masters mean that should he be fit to start he can never be totally ruled out. However, after withdrawing from the Genesis Invitational through illness, Woods has not been able to get another tournament in. A win at the Masters is extremly unlikely. BetVictor have him priced at 125/1 at the time of writing.
Prediction
Scheffler is currently ranked number one in the world and triumphed here in 2022. He is coming towards the tournament in form and given that he will be playing in his home country and have the support of the crowd he might just have the edge on McIlroy and Rahm. Victory at Sawgrass in the Players Tournament will have further boosted his morale. The Australian is clearly suited to the Augusta National. He has three top-five finishes in his last six Masters. In 2022 he began the final round in the last two alongside Scheffle. He has some recent form behind him on the LIV tour, losing out to Abraham Ancer in a playoff at the LIV even in Hong Kong.
Brian Harman, 70/1 BetVictor
If you are looking for an out bet which may give you value, then British Open champion Brian Harman could be worth a punt. At the time of writing, BetVictor have him at 50/1. Harman has proved that he is capable of winning at a Major and recently tied for second in The Players Championship. In 2021 he had a T-12 finish at the Masters before missing the cut in 2022 and 2023. If Harman can get to grips with the Augusta National he has shown that he has the quality to mix it with the best.

The anticipation for the Masters is palpable with Rory McIlroy embarking on his 10th attempt to complete the career Grand Slam. His tee time at 15:42 BST alongside Scottie Scheffler, the reigning 2022 victor, and Xander Schauffele, promises an intriguing start.
Defending champion Jon Rahm, paired with England’s Matt Fitzpatrick, tees off just ahead at 15:30 BST, setting the stage for an exciting early round.
The ceremonial tee shots by golfing legends Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, and Tom Watson before the first group, led by Erik Van Rooyen, adds a touch of tradition and reverence to the event.
