Switzerland: Euro 2024 Overview

Switzerland are in Group A alongside hosts Germany, Scotland and Hungary. Switzerland were quarter finalists at the last Euros and also reached the last 16 of the 2022 World Cup. They are a good side with tournament experience. However, their qualifying campaign saw them come through in second place to Romania. However, they come into the tournament in need of building some momentum. They made a great start to qualifying but rather limped over the line with draws against Belarus, Israel and Kosovo, and a loss to Romania. Their tournament pedigree means that they cannot be discounted. For further details on Euro 2024 as a whole check out our tournament preview.

How Switzerland qualified for the Euros

Switzerland qualified for Euro 2024 in second place, behind Romania, in qualifying Group I with a record of four wins, five draws and only one defeat.

Switzerland Euro 2024 Squad

Switzerland usually line up in a 4 2 3 1 formation. Their system is based on patience and possession and, when things work well, they are a solid, well organised side. Captain Granit Xhaka is still a huge influence, as is Xherdan Shaqiri, who will be a creative force. Manuel Akanji of Manchester City is a key figure in defence and could be partnerered by Fabian Schar of Newcastle United.

A number of players, including Xhaka, Shaqiri, Akanji, Schar and goalkeeper Yann Sommer of Inter Milan are veterans of previous tournaments.

Key Players

Swiss captain Xhaka is hugely important for his leadership and his influence in the middle of the park. He has been part of Bayer Leverkusen’s success in the Bundesliga this season. He made his senior debut in 2011 is currently Switzerland’s record appearance holder, with over 120 caps. He represented the Swiss at the FIFA World Cup in 2014, 2018 and 2022 and the UEFA European Championship in 2016 and 2020.

Vice-captain Shaquiri, a creative player who often oporates from wide positions, is currently playing in the MLS for Chicargo Fire. Like Xhaka he has been a jey component of the national team for a number of years. He made his senior international debut in 2010 and has earned 114 caps and scored 27 goals for Switzerland, making him the country’s third most capped player and sixth-highest goal-scorer. He represented the Swiss at the 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups, as well as UEFA Euro 2016 and UEFA Euro 2020.

A full international since 2017, Akanji is known for his cultured style of play, his technical ability, coolness in possession, and distribution. He is also a strong and physical defender who is comfortable in one-on-one situations and is skilled at intercepting passes and making tackles. The Manchester City star has experienced a number of international tournaments.

Switzerland Odds at Euro 2024

At the time of writing, Switzerland are 66/1 outsiders to win the tournament and are priced at 11/2 to win the group with bet365, I feel that the bookies have got things right. They are an experienced tournament team and know how to negotiate a path to the knockout stages. They may be a good pick to make the round of 16 or even the quarterfinals. However, the Swiss lack a little quality and strength in depth when it comes to competing at the business end of the tournament.
