Austria are known as one of the most successful nations in Alpine skiing and ski jumping. However, football is also important to Austrians, especially in the bigger cities.

Ahead of the start of Euro 2024 in neighbouring Germany, there is anticipation ahead of the tournament, however, the mood is hope rather than expectation, given the quality of the oposition in Group D. Austria are up against France, the Netherlands and the play off winners from Path A, Poland.

Euri 2024 will be Austria’s fourth time in the finals of the European Championships. Their best performance was reaching the round of 16 in Euro 2020. In 2016 and 2008 they went out in the group stage. It will be a tall order for them to progress this time, given the calibre of their opposition in the group. Advancement from the group would be a great achivement for Ralf Rangnick’s side.

How Austria qualified for Euro 2024

Austria made it to Euro 2024 by securing second place in EC qualifying group F at the expense of Sweden, who had to settle for third place. The Austrians lost only one match in the qualifiers and took a total of 19 points, which was one point less than group winners Belgium .

They started according to plan with two straight victories at home against Azerbaijan and Estonia before playing 1-1 away against Belgium in round 3. Then there were two wins against Sweden before their only loss, at home against Belgium.

In thequalifiers, they scored 17 goals and only conceded seven. Marcel Sabitzer scored the most goals for the Austrians, with four.

Austria’s Euro 2024 squad

It is a relatively strong and well-known squad that travels north to neighbouring Germany.  Several of the players in Rangnick’s squad play their club football in the German Bundesliga, including Marcel Sabitzer, Dortmund, Xaver Schlager, Leipzig and Konrad Laimer, Bayern Munich.

Spanish La Liga and Italian Serie A are also represented in Austria’s EC squad. From the big teams Real Madrid and Inter come David Alaba and Marko Arnautović, they two most experienced players in the squad. Both have over 100 caps and for Arnautović this could well be the last major championship. He will be 35 years old when the Euros start.

Austria boss Rangnick is known for his innovative and tactically advanced coaching philosophy, which focuses on high intensity, pressing play and quick transitions. He is an advocate of what is known as “Counter-Pressing”, which means that his team aggressively chases the ball when they lose it in order to recover it as quickly as possible.

The former Manchester United manager also places great importance on the players’ physical preparation and tactical discipline, and he aims to build a team that is flexible and able to adapt to different opponents and game situations. In addition to this, he is also known for developing young talent.
