- Sabalenka sees off Paolini
- Gauff extends winning streak
- Swiatek gets past Garcia
Aryna Sabalenka faces a quarter-final showdown against Elena Rybakina at the China Open after defeating Jasmine Paolini. And Coco Gauff marched into the semi-finals with her 16th straight victory.
Sabalenka sets up Rybakina clash
Sabalenka, the reigning world number one, secured her spot in the quarter-finals of the China Open with a commanding straight-set victory over Italy’s Paolini. Sabalenka, who recently reached the final of the US Open, defeated the 36th-ranked Paolini with a scoreline of 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
The Australian Open winner is now set to face off against the 2022 Wimbledon champion, Elena Rybakina, in the next round of the tournament.
Gauff extends unbeaten run
Gauff continues to dazzle on the court, extending her remarkable winning streak to 16 matches and securing a spot in the semi-finals of the China Open. The 19-year-old American, fresh off her maiden major triumph at the US Open in September, displayed exceptional form in Beijing, dispatching Greek sixth seed Maria Sakkari with a commanding 6-2, 6-4 victory.
Gauff’s exceptional run includes clinching her first WTA 1000 title in Cincinnati and securing her maiden Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows.
Since her early exit at Wimbledon in the first round against Sofia Kenin, Gauff has been virtually unstoppable, winning 22 out of 23 matches.
With her current world ranking at number three, Gauff is poised to face off against Iga Swiatek, who holds the second spot in the rankings. Swiatek’s resilience was on full display as she mounted a remarkable comeback from the brink of defeat against Caroline Garcia. Despite being just two points away from victory, Garcia ultimately succumbed to Swiatek in a nail-biting contest, ending 6-7 (8-10), 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 in Swiatek’s favour.
Betting Implications
Bettors need to evaluate whether they think Gauff can keep her remarkable run going against Swiatek, who is currently favourite for the tournament. Or whether Sabalenka, who sits at the top of the world rankings will reinforce her position. At the time of writing SpreadEx have Swiatek at 6/4, Sabalenka 14/5, Gauff 3/1 and Rybakina 13/2.
