Carlo Ancelotti has officially extended his contract with Real Madrid until 2026, putting an end to the uncertainties surrounding his future. The Italian manager’s previous deal was set to expire next summer, and there were persistent rumours linking him to the Brazil national team coaching position.

Ancelotti commits to Madrid

Despite expressions of interest from the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) and former CBF president Ednaldo Rodrigues, Ancelotti’s commitment to Real Madrid prevailed. The 64-year-old coach, who had previously managed the club from 2013 to 2015, expressed pride at the prospect of managing one of the world’s biggest national teams but ultimately prioritised staying with the La Liga giants.

Throughout 2023, there were speculations that Ancelotti might join Brazil, with reports suggesting written indications of his willingness to take up the role. However, the coach remained open to an extension from Real Madrid, stating publicly that he would wait for an offer until the last day.

Real Madrid, known for not making definitive moves during the season, recognized the appeal of Brazil to Ancelotti but valued his contribution to the club. Ancelotti has secured 10 titles, including two Champions League trophies and one La Liga title, in five seasons across two spells with Real Madrid.

The decision to extend Ancelotti’s contract was influenced by his success and his ability to work with young players. The Madrid board emphasised the importance of continuity for stability, particularly in light of economic challenges at the club. Chief executive officer Jose Angel expressed unconditional support for the head coach.

The official announcement of Ancelotti’s contract extension came as a surprise to the coach, despite previous informal conversations between the parties. With this matter resolved, Real Madrid, currently leading La Liga, can focus on achieving further success. Meanwhile, Brazil must now search for a permanent successor to Tite as their national team manager and Rodrigues’ successor as the head of the Brazilian Football Federation.

Betting Implications

Ancelotti’s contract extension gives added stability to Madrid. A lot can change quickly at the Bernabeu, they are not a club historically renowned for patience, however, the strategy seems to be to allow the Italian to build another winning side. Bettors may feel that this will boost the club in their quest for La Liga and the Champions League. At the time of writing, bet365 have Madrid as 1/4 favourites for La Liga and are third favourites for the Champions League behind Manchester City and Bayern Munich. City are priced at 15/8, Bayern at 4/1 and Madrid at 11/2.
