The party with a majority of seats in Parliament forms the government. In cases where no party has a majority, parties may form coalitions. Situations where no single party has a majority can give smaller parties significant influence, as seen in the 2010 and 2017 elections.
The party with the most seats not in government becomes the Official Opposition, currently held by the Labour Party.
General elections must occur before each parliamentary term begins, and the interval between successive general elections cannot exceed the combined length of the election and the time for the new parliament to assemble.
