Newcastle United host Southampton in the EFL Cup semi-final second leg at St James’ Park. The tie is finely poised after the Magpies left the South Coast with a 1-0 lead.
Eddie Howe’s side missed a number of chances at St Mary’s, but the Saints also caused them a number of problems as they continue to improve under Nathan Jones.
History does not favour Jones and his side, should they prevail they will become only the third club to overturn a first-leg home deficit in the competition’s semi-finals.
Newcastle had a free weekend due to their FA cup exit at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday at the beginning of the month. Southampton beat Blackpool 2-1 to progress to the fifth round on Saturday.
Newcastle will be without long-term absentees Emil Krafth and Matt Targett. Valentino Livramento is still unavailable for Southampton with a knee injury, while Moussa Djenepo faces a late fitness test.

Manchester United have one foot firmly in the final after a convincing 3-0 win at the City Ground in the first leg. Erik ten Hag will guard against complacency, however it would take a huge collapse for United not to progress. They progressed to the FA cup fifth round on Saturday evening with a convincing home win over Reading.
Nottingham Forest will be aiming for an unlikely comeback. Steve Cooper’s side have progressed in recent weeks, however, overturning a three-goal deficit at Old Trafford is a huge ask.
Christian Eriksen, Donny van de Beek, Axel Tuanzebe, Anthony Martial and Diogo Dalot are currently sidelined for the Red Devils. Jadon Sancho may be fit enough to play some part, while a late decision will be made on Scott McTominay and Luke Shaw.
For Forest Morgan Gibbs-White is unlikely to recover from the injury sustained in the first leg. Moussa Niakhate, Giulian Biancone, Taiwo Awoniyi, Cheikhou Kouyate and Omar Richards are all injury doubts. Dean Henderson is also in the treatment room, however, he is unavailable for this tie anyway as he can’t play against his parent club.
Ex Manchester United attacker Jesse Lingard could face his former side. Emmanuel Dennis is another option. Ryan Yates missed the first leg due to illness and it is unknown whether he will have recovered in time.
