How to choose the best site for you

We have searched all over the internet to weigh up pros and cons of the best UK General Election betting sites. It is, however, a personal decision when choosing your bookmaker. You will want to look through a few of the options for yourself before landing on a preferred site.

So, to make that step a bit smoother, we have identified seven key criteria when choosing your site:

  1. Read up on licences: All punters want to make sure their financial details and personal data are safe. The only way to guarantee this is by playing with a licensed bookmaker. A Google search should help you find a bookie’s licences and it will be visible on their website.
  2. Learn about welcome offers: Welcome offers can seem similar. You will soon find they vary significantly, though, and it is useful to make sure you sign up at a bookmaker with a welcome promo which suits your betting habits.
  3. Search for the General Election odds: It is worth having a look at a bookie’s politics odds to make sure they provide the markets you are interested in. The name of this section will vary, some bookies call it politics, others have political events in a section with other non sports bets such as tv shows and novelty bets etc. Under this you should find a section for UK Politics and, under that, the General Election.
  4. Check the payment options: The available payment options can vary from bookie to bookie. The more payment methods available, the more flexibility you have when it comes to withdrawing and depositing.
  5. Find out what others think: Reviews are a good way to get an idea of a bookmaker’s reputation. If others are happy with their experience, it’s generally a good sign.
  6. Download the app: Being able to bet on the go is useful. Download the app on your preferred device and see what you make of it.
  7. Sign up: After checking all the boxes, it’s time to sign-up and figure out if this is the right betting site for you.

About the General Election

In the United Kingdom, general elections are held after the dissolution of Parliament, with all Members of Parliament (MPs) in the House of Commons elected. Following the Dissolution and Calling of Parliament Act 2022, parliamentary terms last five years unless Parliament is dissolved earlier by the monarch at the request of the prime minister. Under this Act, polling day occurs 25 working days after dissolution. During this period, all parliamentary business ceases, and MPs’ roles are suspended until after polling day.

Candidates for each constituency are selected by political parties or run as independents. While most successful candidates belong to a political party, there have been instances of independent MPs being elected. Each constituency elects one MP through the first past the post system.

The party with a majority of seats in Parliament forms the government. In cases where no party has a majority, parties may form coalitions. Situations where no single party has a majority can give smaller parties significant influence, as seen in the 2010 and 2017 elections.

The party with the most seats not in government becomes the Official Opposition, currently held by the Labour Party.

General elections must occur before each parliamentary term begins, and the interval between successive general elections cannot exceed the combined length of the election and the time for the new parliament to assemble.

The Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011 initially set fixed terms of five years, with elections scheduled every five years on the first Thursday in May. However, the Act allowed for early elections under certain circumstances, such as a vote of no confidence or a two-thirds majority vote in Parliament. The Dissolution and Calling of Parliament Act 2022 repealed the Fixed-term Parliaments Act, restoring the monarch’s powers to dissolve and summon parliament.

The prime minister requests the monarch to dissolve Parliament by royal proclamation, ordering the issuance of formal election writs for each constituency.

Election day is traditionally held on a Thursday. Voting ends at 10 pm, after which ballot boxes are transported to central counting locations. Counts typically begin within four hours of polls closing, with results declared by local returning officers.

Formation of a government occurs when one party achieves a majority in the House of Commons. If no majority is achieved, the incumbent prime minister may resign, allowing the leader of the party with a majority to form a new government. In cases of a hung parliament, where no party has a majority, negotiations for coalition or minority government take place.

Following each election, the prime minister may reshuffle the cabinet, and any vacancies in the House of Commons are filled by by-elections.

Overall, the process ensures the democratic functioning of the UK’s parliamentary system, with regular elections determining the composition of Parliament and the formation of the government.

Conversely, the 1997 General Election marked its lowest performance since 1918, with only 165 MPs and a 30.7% vote share. However, in 2019, the party rebounded, winning 365 seats, the most since 1987.

Labour

Labour’s first majority government emerged in 1945. Despite securing its highest vote share of 48.8% in 1951, Labour faced defeat in terms of seats to the Conservatives. Conversely, the party’s worst performance post-war occurred in 1983, with 27.6% of the vote and 209 seats. The 1997 election marked a peak for Labour with 418 seats. However, in 2019, they plummeted to 202 seats, the lowest since 1935.

Liberal Democrats

The Liberal Party’s collaboration with the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 1983 and 1987 culminated in the formation of the Liberal Democrat Party in 1988. Despite winning a quarter of votes in 1983, they secured only 23 seats. The party’s peak came in 2005 with 62 MPs, but dwindled to 8 in 2015 before a slight recovery to 11 in 2019.

Scottish National Party

The SNP won its first seat in 1970. Its zenith was the May 2015 election, clinching 50% of the Scottish vote and 56 seats. In 2019, despite securing 48 seats and a 45% Scottish vote share, they fell short of their 2015 peak.

Plaid Cymru

Plaid Cymru’s best general election performance yielded four seats in 1992, 1997, 2001, 2017, and 2019.

Green Party

The Green Party secured its first House of Commons seat in 2010, remaining consistent with one seat in subsequent elections. Although they increased their vote share in 2019, they did not match the record set in 2015.

Ulster Unionists

The Ulster Unionists dominated elections until 1972, initially aligning with the Conservatives. The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) supplanted them as the main unionist party in 2001.

Democratic Unionist Party

The DUP won eight seats in 2019, two fewer than in 2017, marking a shift in Northern Ireland’s political landscape.

Sinn Féin

Sinn Féin maintained its seven seats in 2019, despite a decline in vote share compared to 2017, marking its highest representation since 1922.

Social Democratic and Labour Party

The SDLP’s recovery in 2019 with two seats followed a setback in 2017 when they failed to secure any seats for the first time since 1970.

Who is the favourite to win the General Election in 2024?

Labour are favourites at the time of writing, making Sir Keir Starmer favourite to be the next Prime Minister.
