Conor McGregor vs Michael Chandler

Conor McGregor will make his long-awaited return to the Otagon where he will face Michael Chandler in the welterweight division. A showdown between former UFC two-division champion McGregor (22-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) and former Bellator lightweight champion Chandler (23-8 MMA, 2-3 UFC) has been expected ever since they served as opposing coaches on Season 31 of “The Ultimate Fighter” last year. But it’s been a waiting game to finally get the fight done as McGregor recovered from a broken leg, exited the UFC’s drug-testing program and then re-entered it, and filmed a “Road House” remake with co-star Jake Gyllenhaal.

All the while, Chandler has been patiently awaiting his big-money fight, having not competed since a November 2022 submission loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC 281. It’s been even longer for McGregor, who hasn’t fought since a July 2021 injury TKO loss to Poirier after breaking his leg in the first round.

Both McGregor, 35, and Chandler, 37, have been losers in three of their past four octagon appearances. With their fight being contested at welterweight, it’s hard to say what a win could do for either man in that division, although McGregor is just looking for the biggest fights possible with two bouts left on his UFC contract.

Conor McGregor

McGregor’s UFC journey has been a whirlwind of highs and lows, defined by his explosive victories, historic achievements, and enduring resilience. From his sensational debut and rapid ascent to becoming the first fighter to hold titles in two weight classes simultaneously, McGregor’s impact on the sport is undeniable. It has been a long way back for McGregor after his leg injury, though it is clear that the Irishman still has plenty to offer.

Michael Chandler

Chandler was a three-time Bellator Lightweight Champion and in Bellator Season 4 he won the Lightweight tournament. He signed for UFC in 2020. As of April 16, 2024, he is ranked seventh in the UFC lightweight rankings. Like McGregor, Chandler’s last bout was against Dustin Poirier. Poirier won the bout via submission in November 2022.

Chandler has had a great career with Bellator and despite losing three form five since signing up with UFC, he has shown that he is still a top performer. His bouts have been entertaining and memorable. He lost to then champion Charles Oliveira in his second UFC fight with his other losses coming against Justin Gaethje and Poirier. The match-up against McGregor was confirmed but no set date in early 2023, when the pair were opposing coaches in the UFC’s Ultimate Fighter reality TV series.

Prediction

Both fighters have had a long absence from competition so there is a degree of uncertainty over how they will deal with this. Both men have spent most of their careers at lightweight. McGregor has fought at welterweight three times, winning twice, while Chandler will be making his debut in the division. Since he became UFC Champion in two classes back in 2016 McGregor has only won once. However we are tipping Notorious to get the win here.

Tip: McGregor to win.
