Tuchel set to depart Bayern in summer

Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel is set to depart the club at the conclusion of the current season, a year earlier than initially planned, as part of what the club terms “a sporting realignment.”

Tuchel, 50, took over the managerial reins from Julian Nagelsmann in March 2023, signing a contract that was supposed to last until June 2025. However, Bayern Munich has decided to end their collaboration with Tuchel earlier than expected due to recent sporting setbacks.

Despite leading Bayern to the Bundesliga title last season, the team finds itself trailing eight points behind league leaders Bayer Leverkusen following successive league defeats. A notable 3-0 loss to Leverkusen and a 1-0 defeat against Lazio in the first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie have raised concerns within the club.

Jan-Christian Dreesen, CEO of Bayern Munich, stated that both parties agreed to mutually end their collaboration after an open and constructive conversation. Dreesen emphasized the club’s intention to realign its sporting strategy with a new coach for the 2024-25 season. He urged everyone associated with Bayern to strive for success in both the Bundesliga and the Champions League until the end of the season.

In response, Tuchel affirmed his commitment to achieving maximum success with the team until the conclusion of the season. Tuchel, who previously managed Chelsea, Paris St-Germain, and Borussia Dortmund, led Chelsea to a Champions League victory in 2021.

Despite high hopes following the acquisition of England captain Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur for an initial fee of 100 million euros (£86 million), Bayern Munich have experienced a challenging period. The team has fallen further behind Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga standings and faces the daunting task of overturning a first-leg deficit against Lazio in the Champions League.

The recent 3-2 defeat against Bochum marked Bayern’s third consecutive loss in all competitions, highlighting the need for a turnaround in form as they strive to end the season on a positive note under Tuchel’s guidance.
