Mahomes favourite for MVP ahead of Purdy
When the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers collide in Super Bowl LVIII, both teams will have a host of MVP candidates on the field.
History says this award is most likely go to one of the team’s quarterbacks — Patrick Mahomes (already a two-time winner) or Brock Purdy — but that is not always a given. In the last 10 Super Bowls, quarterbacks have taken home the top individual award six times, but the other four were secured by two wide receivers (Cooper Kupp and Julian Edelman) and two linebackers (Von Miller and Malcolm Smith).
Going back even further, we find running backs, defensive backs, defensive linemen and even a special teams star (kick returner Desmond Howard) among the Super Bowl MVP winners.
Anyone who steps onto Allegiant Stadium’s turf technically has a chance to be named MVP, but unless you just have cash to burn, you shouldn’t bother betting so much as a penny on the majority of players. To give you some guidance on the betting front, we will list all the players with the best odds to win the prize before reviewing a dark horse and identifying our predicted winner.

The favourite: Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the favourite to be the Super Bowl MVP among the betting sites.
Mahomes has thrown for 718 passing yards with five touchdowns and zero interceptions over three playoff games this year. After a relatively weak start to the season, the Chiefs quarterback has improved as time goes by and when it comes down to the Super Bowl, it usually shines to a great extent.
Mahomes has already won the Super Bowl MVP twice in his young career, and he’s a good choice to do it again against the 49ers. The Chiefs don’t have the same calibre of stars as San Francisco (except for Travis Kelce). Should the Chiefs win the Super Bowl again, there are many indications that they will do so thanks to their superstar quarterback!
Odds: 5/4
The challenger: Brock Purdy, 49ers
That the main challenger to Patrick Mahomes is 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is hardly a big deal, since 60% of the MVP winners in the last 10 years have been quarterbacks. As for Purdy’s MVP chances, they’re really good for one big reason. He is the quarterback for the favourite team in the Super Bowl.
Purdy is coming off a solid performance in the NFC Final against the Detroit Lions where his 49ers turned a tough deficit into victory. However, what speaks against Purdy a little is that there are a whole host of match winners in his team. Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle are all players who can outshine their quarterback and take home the award.
Odds: 2/1
Outsider No. 1: Christian McCaffrey, 49ers
With all due respect to Purdy and Mahomes, a compelling argument could be made that McCaffrey is the surest choice to deliver impressive stats in the Super Bowl. In game after game, the 49ers running back has shined and it is almost more the rule than the exception that he has been among the best players on the 49ers this season.
In 14 of 18 games, he has been recorded for 100 yards or more per game. In just three games, McCaffrey has not been recorded for a touchdown and averages around 140 passing and receiving yards. Against a Chiefs defence that has had a lot of problems this season, McCaffrey can celebrate big triumphs and if his 49ers win the Super Bowl, the MVP could very well end up with the 23rd in San Francisco.
Odds: 4/1
Outsider No. 2: Travis Kelce, Chiefs
If you’re a bit conspiratorially inclined, putting your money on Kelce winning the Super Bowl MVP might be of great interest. In her podcast “Page and Austin”, the former UFC star: Paige VanZant talks about Kelce and Swift’s relationship where she believes that everything is just a PR coup. The “love story” is just about creating publicity, something they seem to have succeeded in quite well. Since Swift and Kelce became a couple, Chiefs jersey sales have skyrocketed.
Should the Chiefs take home the Super Bowl, Kelce is a given candidate, even if you ignore the relationship with Swift. In the AFC final against the Baltimore Ravens, the Chiefs tight end accounted for one touchdown and 11 receptions for a total of 116 yards. If he shows similar numbers in the Super Bowl, an MVP title is close at hand…
Odds: 14/1
