Trailing 0-2 after thirty minutes and seemingly headed for another defeat, Manchester United staged a remarkable comeback. The match was beforehand speculated to be the potential last for Erik Ten Hag in case of another disappointment, but the spectacular comeback might now give some needed time and space. Miraculous comeback gives Man United hope
Manchester United’s last victory in the Premier League was a home game against Chelsea on December 6. Since then, they have suffered two defeats and a draw, failing to score in any of these matches.
During the Boxing Day fixture against Aston Villa, the team faced another setback. Within 26 minutes, the visitors had taken a 2-0 lead with goals from Leander Dendoncker and John McGinn. McGinn scored the opening goal from a free-kick at the 21-minute mark, and the Belgian player doubled the lead following a corner five minutes later.
However, the home team made an unexpected recovery.
In the second half, Alejandro Garnacho scored twice, ending Manchester United’s seven-hour goal drought. With only eight minutes left in the match, young Rasmus Höjlund netted his first Premier League goal, making it 3-2 after a corner kick. It took Höjlund 1,026 minutes to score his first goal in the league, a fact reflected in his celebration, which was a mix of joy and relief.
The 20-year-old expressed his happiness, saying, “It took a while, but I’m so pleased. Hopefully, I can build on this. You could see it in the celebration. We believed in it all the time,” in a statement to Viaplay.
This victory elevates United to sixth place in the league standings, and might spark newfound hope to salvage what can be salvaged from a tough season.
