England look to bounce back against West Indies

England continue their winter campaign with the second ODI of the series against the West Indies. A fantastic quick-fire century from captain Shai Hope inspired the hosts to an amazing comeback in the first match on Sunday. England remain favaourites for the second match and for the series, but may have their work cut out against the home side who will be boosted by their superb win.

West Indies

Hope smashed 109 not out from just 83 balls as the hosts chased down a target of 326 to win with seven balls to spare.

Needing an improbable 106 from the 10 remaining overs with five wickets in hand, skipper Hope was backed up by Romario Shepherd’s rapid 48 from 28 balls. Hope blasted three sixes in the 49th over to finish the job in some style. The West Indies, who did not qualify for the World Cup, went into the match as underdogs and they looked less likely to win as the match unfolded. However, they chased down their target superbly and will go into the second match in confident mood.

West Indies squad: Shai Hope (captain), Alzarri Joseph (vice captain), Alick Athanaze, Yannic Cariah, Keacy Carty, Roston Chase, Shane Dowrich, Matthew Forde, Shimron Hetmyer, Brandon King, Gudakesh Motie, Kjorn Ottley, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd, Oshane Thomas.

England

A much changed England line-up looked to be heading for victory for much of the first match. After making a great start to their innings they stuttered somewhat with Harry Brook, who hit 71 from 72 balls the only batsman to score more than 50. However, they looked to have done enough until Hope’s intervention. England remain favourites for both the second ODI and the series. They will, however, need to be more clinical.

England squad: Jos Buttler (captain), Rehan Ahmed, Gus Atkinson, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Sam Curran, Ben Duckett, Tom Hartley, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Ollie Pope, Phil Salt, Matthew Potts, John Turner

Prediction

England will be all too aware of what Hope can produce and will also be aware of the character in the West Indies side. They will also be aware that they failed to press home their advantage when in a winning position and will hope to improve in this respect with both bat and ball. England remain favourites and I think that this time they will get the job done. England win.
