Tottenham host Liverpool as both sides look to build on positive start
Spurs and Liverpool both had disappointing campaigns last season, however, both have made a positive start to the season this time round. They are both unbeaten in the Premier League so far this season and both teams will be aiming for a top four finish.
Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham have started the season extremely well under new boss Ange Postecoglou, despite the loss of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich. After an opening day draw against Brentford Spurs have rattled off victories over Man United, Bournemouth, Burnley and Sheffield United. The win over the Blades came via a late turnaround with two injury time goals. Postecoglou’s side showed character to find a way to win when things didn’t look to be going their way. And as a lack of resilience was a criticism frequently levelled at the Cockerills over the last couple of seasons, the manner of the result will come as a huge boost. They followed this up with a creditable draw at Arsenal in the North London derby and are currently in fourth place and are unbeaten in their six league matches so far.
Tottenham have been full of goals this season, despite the loss of Harry Kane, with James Maddison settling in really well and Son Heung-min getting back to his best. Spurs have scored two or more in each of their first six Premier League matches, meaning Postecoglou joins an exclusive club of managers alongside Carlo Ancelotti, Pep Guardiloa and Craig Shakespeare in having acheived this feat. Despite the excellent point at the Emirates and their free scoring, Spurs have slipped to fifth, thanks to Brighton and this weekend’s opponents Liverpool winning last weekend.
Summer signing Brennan Johnson suffered a hamstring injury after an hour of the North London derby. He is unlikely to be involved against Liverpool, with Richarlison set to come into the team. Maddison picked up a knee injury against Arsenal and was also substituted, though it may not be too serious and he has a fighting chance of making the squad for the Liverpool match.
Other injuries for Spurs include Ivan Perisic (knee), Giovani Lo Celso (thigh), Alfie Whiteman (ankle), Rodrigo Bentancur (knee). Bryan Gil (groin) and Ryan Sessegnon (hamstring) have returned to training but this weekend may well come too soon.
Liverpool
After a difficult campaign last season, Liverpool are looking to get back into the Champions League, and, hopefully, mount a convincing title challenge this time round. To their credit, they made a late run at the end of last season, which secured a Europa League place and brought them fairly close to a fourth place finish and, in terms of results, have continued where they left off.
Jurgen Klopp may have concerns that his team have gone behind several times this season, both domestically and in Europe. But they have shown the character to come back an get positive results and are second in the Premier League after a win over West Ham United. Then in midweek they moved into the fourth round of the EFL Cup with a 3-1 win over Leicester City.
The match is likely to come too soon for Thiago Alcantara, who should return in early October. Trent Alexander-Arnold could come back into the side after injury.
Prediction
Both sides have made positive starts to the season, and both the pundit and the bookies seem to view it as a match which could go either way. . A score draw looks like the most likely outcome.
