Wimbledon 2024

The 2024 Wimbledon championships will take place between July 1 and July 14 2024.

Wimbledon Championships

Wimbledon, known as The Championships, stands as the oldest tennis tournament globally and is revered by many as the epitome of prestige. Since its inception in 1877, it has found its home at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London. The tournament unfolds on outdoor grass courts, and as of 2019, boasts retractable roofs over its two primary arenas.

As one of the four Grand Slam tournaments, alongside the Australian Open, the French Open, and the US Open, Wimbledon holds the distinction of being the sole major event played on grass, the traditional surface of tennis. Notably, it upholds a night-time curfew, although matches can now extend until 11.00 pm under artificial lighting.

Traditionally spanning two weeks from late June to early July, Wimbledon commences on the final Monday of June and reaches its pinnacle with the Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s Singles Finals on the concluding weekend. Alongside the five main events, junior and invitational competitions further enrich the tournament’s allure. In 2009, the installation of a retractable roof on Centre Court mitigated rain-induced delays, with a similar enhancement on No. 1 Court in 2019, accompanied by various upgrades including cushioned seating and enhanced camera coverage.

Wimbledon cherishes its customs, including a stringent dress code mandating all-white attire for participants and the patronage of royalty. The indulgence in strawberries and cream is a cherished tradition among attendees. Notably, the tournament maintains a discreet approach to advertising, primarily featuring official suppliers like Slazenger and Rolex. The association with Slazenger represents the longest-standing sponsorship in sports history, dating back to 1902 with their provision of tennis balls for the tournament.

The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated the cancellation of Wimbledon in 2020, marking the first such instance since World War II. However, the rescheduled 134th edition took place from June 28 to July 11, 2021. The subsequent edition, the 135th, was held from June 27 to July 10, 2022, notable for its commemoration of a century since the inaugural championships at Centre Court. Notably, controversies arose in 2022 as the tournament excluded players representing Russia and Belarus, prompting the ATP, ITF, and WTA to refrain from awarding ranking points.

The 2023 Wimbledon Championships, the 136th edition, ran from July 3 to July 16. Looking ahead, the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, the 137th edition, are scheduled to take place from July 1 to July 14, continuing the rich legacy of this esteemed tournament.
