Group F Summary

The Group of Death did not fail to deliver high quality entertainment. In fact, Group F was an action packed story from the start, and it ended with one of the most entertaining conclusions we have seen in EURO history. When the dust has now settled we have ended up with France winning the group, Germany in second place, and Portugal in third just like in EURO 2016. Exactly what we all expected right? Well, not exactly.

Hungary managed to give all these world class teams a run for their money. A point against France made the world champion's journey slightly unclear, and Germany were on the brink of complete failure, but saved their lives in the dying minutes. Portugal were also just inches from being knocked out in the final round. Still, here we are with the football world in the “right” order.

The Highlight

Ending last in a group could rarely be seen as a good thing, but Hungary can leave EURO 2020 with the straightest backs imaginable. Marco Rossi has done amazing work with this squad, and if they played in any other group we are confident they would now stand in the Round of 16. Their opening match against Portugal at a fully seated Ferenc Puskas might have ended 0-3, but the 0-0 in the 84th minute could have well been the end result.

After this Hungary went on to win a point against France, and they deserved it too. The noteworthy fact is also that they didn’t do so by playing destructive football, but all by their own quality both in defence and offense. The third and final round became as much of a thriller as it could have been. Hungary had both 1-0 and 2-1 against Germany, which would have been enough for a playoff ticket. Instead, Leon Goretzka scored 2-2 in the 84th minute at Allianz Arena to break the Hungarian hearts. Last place is last place, but Hungary could have easily deserved more than they ended up getting. Still, their performance is well above expectation and worth raising your hat for.

The Disappointment

While they made it through to the playoff as described above, it has to be said that Germany is the disappointment of Group F. Joachim Löw was exceptionally close to ending his career for die Mannschaft with a complete failure. A late goal now gives both him and the German team a chance to redeem themselves in the playoffs. They have a tough task ahead of them though, as they will face England at Wembley.

The play shown thus far by Germany won’t be enough to do much at EURO 2020, but there is time to improve of course. That better happen fast, as the German defence has had their fair share of struggle, which the five conceded goals are a statement of. The offense on the other hand has had moments of brilliance, but the question is how it can perform against a rock-solid English defence?

Group F Euro 2020/2021 Overview

Without a doubt, Didier Deschamps’s Blues will start with slightly higher expectations from the observers, especially after their World Cup title in 2018 and given the depth of their squad. Where Portugal and Germany above all rely on successful leaders, France has indeed high quality men from the bench, like Aouar, Coman, Ben Yedder, Lemar, Ndombélé, Kimpembe or even Mandanda. Nothing seems easy in this group, especially as the Germans will play their matches in Munich, nevertheless the French team is expected to top their group at the end of the initial phase.

This group is one of the most anticipated in Euro 2020/2021 by all football fans. When we have Mbappe, Ronaldo and Gundogan all in one place the ingredients needed for spectacle are all in place. Even Hungary, who has the weakest team on paper can cause really big troubles to the Big Trio. The Hungarians have their secret weapon in the face of Szoboszlai, and we expect nothing less than thrilling and breathtaking clashes.

Just like between 1998 and 2000, the Blues could therefore achieve another historic double, if the stars align. Mbappé, Kanté, Griezmann and the others are definitely up for the task of repeating what their childhood heroes once did..
