The great unfinished of all time: England

The fourth group in Euro 2020, Group D features England, Croatia, the Czech Republic and Scotland who will surely provide us with thrilling clashes. Unsurprisingly, and despite the quality of the Croats, it is the English Three Lions who are considered to finish at the top of this group. Fourth in the last World Cup, Southgate's boys seem to like the most qualified team and are technically above their opponents in this group.

Group D Summary

Looking at the end result of this group with England as the winner, Croatia as the runner-up, the Czechs making it through at third place, and Scotland at the bottom - sounds quite logical doesn’t it? It sure does, but the fact of the matter is that we reached this conclusion after several twists and turns. While England’s group win was never in much danger after they beat Croatia 1-0 in their opening match, Croatia went to hell and back to secure a playoff ticket. In the final match against Scotland it was all on the line before Croatia finally showed some of the quality their team possesses. A close call to say the least. Meanwhile it has to be said that Scotland could have deserved more from this group than what they ended up with.

The Highlight

Let’s be clear - it’s really hard to find a team in this group worthy of being called the highlight, and it might surprise you, but we are going with the Czech Republic for this one. Jaroslav Šilhavý and his squad were not expected to make any waves at EURO 2020/2021, still here they are, with a playoff ticket after beating Scotland and drawing against Croatia. On another day they could have snatched points against England too. An interesting fact is also that the team has scored three goals - all through Patrick Schick.

The Czechs will move on to face the Netherlands next in the Round of 16. Without a doubt a big task, but if the team can keep on playing solid defence with deadly counters, then anything can happen.

The Disappointment

This might sound stupid, but yes, we are picking England for this one. We are aware they won the group, we know they have not lost a game, we know they have kept three clean sheets. The thing is that a lot is asked for with this English team, and playing great defence is not enough to deserve our praise, neither will it be enough to win EURO 2020.

Gareth Southgate has got criticised for his player selections and much else, but to be fair, he could make any decision possible and there would be someone questioning it. Still, two goals scored in three matches from possibly the most valuable offensive formation out of all teams in the tournament? No, that’s not good enough, and at times we have seen England do more walking than running on the pitch. Germany is now up next in the knockout phase, and maybe it’s time for England to start waking up. Frankly, this far it has almost looked like the team is not taking this seriously. One could argue that it’s scary you can win your group with that effort though.

Group D Euro 2020/2021 Overview

After the qualifying campaign during which England showed convincing performances thanks to the results which were more than satisfying. From Raheem Sterling to Harry Kane, through Dele Alli, Marcus Rashford or Alexander-Arnold, England seems more prepared above balanced than the other contenders for qualification in this group. Also (potentially) the semi-finals and then the final of the tournament will be played on their Wembley. Enough to extra motivate the troops, if necessary.

Behind the English team, the Croats will logically be expected to find a place in the 1/8 finals. Scotland will have to fight for third place with the Czech Republic, third place can guarantee qualifying for the 1/8 finals too due to the new format of Euro 2020/2021.

If we exclude England as a clear favourite in this group, the other teams have the quality to search for a place in the ⅛ finals. The odds offered by the bookmakers of the winner in this group confirm our expectations. England top in the group is offered at odds around 1.40, the odds for Croatia to finish first in Group D are around 4.00. Meanwhile, Scotland and the Czech Republic have equal odds for the first place which is around 15.00.

The Three Lions are always present among the favourites of the prediction at every event of this kind. Since 1966, however, they have regularly come out with empty hands. Can England win the title this time?
