Football Betting Tips for Turkish Super Lig 2022/23
If there is one word that sums up Turkish football the most, it must surely be passion. Then again, passion does not come close to describing the ferocious support that is afforded to the clubs that operate within the Super Lig.
Until you have been to a game in person, you will never appreciate just how much of a cauldron these stadiums become and, when in European competition, such noise can often be used as an extra player on the pitch.
There is no doubt that Turkish football has a reputation for being intimidating, but there are often questions as to whether or not the talent on the field can back up what is being shouted from the stands.
Although transfer fees are not in short supply, one criticism is that the Super Lig is the European retirement home for ageing stars who do not want to try their luck in the likes of the J League or the MLS.
This means some of the names are well known from years gone by, but they may be missing a yard of pace that they had before, and these older statesmen sometimes have a habit of cutting off first team opportunities for younger names.
Which means although some of the names are well known from years gone by, they may be missing a yard of pace that they had before, and these older statesmen sometimes have a habit of cutting off first team opportunities for younger names.
With that said, the Turkish Super Lig is a competition which is never dull and with it currently being ranked 18th in the UEFA co-efficient rankings, it may need to focus more on matters on the pitch rather than off it..
In terms of format, it is one that mimics all the major European leagues, with it being a double round robin schedule. One that sees 20 clubs compete both home and away across 38 fixture rounds, with nothing in the way of a regular season split.
While with 20 clubs, there is a slight difference compared to the English Premier League for example and that comes in the way of four clubs being relegated this season – something that will keep the entertainment going until the final day of the campaign.
Of course, when it comes to the Turkish game, there are a number of legendary clubs that are based in Istanbul. Those being Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, and Besiktas and although they are considered the big three when it comes to domestic matters, they have not necessarily had it all their own way.
Now we are seeing something of a new age in the Super Lig and one that sees a number of non-Istanbul clubs challenge near the top. While because of this, the old status quo has been disrupted and a breath of fresh air has swept throughout the Turkish top flight, making the right Turkish Super Lig betting tips and Turkish Super Lig predictions even more important if you do not know the Turkish game well.

Previous Season Recap
While there were a number of dramatic league finishes throughout Europe last season, they would not have been as dramatic as what happened within the Super Lig, as the title was decided on goal difference.
Not only that but it was a single goal difference which meant Besiktas pipped crosstown rivals Galatasaray on the final day of the season and were it not for Rachid Ghezzal’s winner away at Goztepe, the league trophy would have made its way to the Türk Telekom Stadium.
The two clubs involved were worthy foes across the campaign and pushed the other all the way, as no quarter was given, and none was asked in their pursuit of the 2021 Super Lig. While both teams were worthy champions, only one could be handed the trophy at the end of the season, making this one of the most intense seasons in memory, and one few Super Lig predictions and Super Lig betting tips would have tipped would be so tight.
After winning the league, Besiktas were afforded entry to the Champions League group stage, while Galatasaray had to make do with entry to the Second qualifying round and the other of the three Istanbul giants Fenerbahce, finished third and earned a berth in the Europa League play-off.
While in terms of UEFA’s new Europa Conference League, Trabzonspor were slotted into the third qualifying round after finishing fourth in the table and Sivasspor the second qualifying round, by virtue of finishing fifth.
Of course, with 21 teams taking part in last season’s Turkish Super Lig, it meant four clubs would be relegated and only three would be promoted (so as to get the number down to an even 20 for this season).
Which meant a quartet of clubs are now plying their trade in the Turkish second tier and the unfortunate four who suffered relegation, were BB Erzurumspor, Ankaragücü, Gençlerbirliği and Denizlispor.
Notable transfers
After being pipped to the title on the final day of last season, it looks like Galatasaray mean business this time around and when it comes to business, they concluded the largest individual deal during the summer transfer window.
A deal that sees Danish Defender Victor Nelsson depart FC Copenhagen for a fee of £6.3m and if his talents can tighten Galatasaray up at the back, it may just help their bid to go one better this time around.
While the expenditure has not stopped there and once again, it is a big money move within the parameters of Turkish football. A move that sees Romanian Midfielder Alexandru Cicaldau join from Univ. Craiova for a fee of £5.85m.
By comparison, defending champions Besiktas have been rather quiet in terms of financial outlay and their most expensive move is the permanent signature of Rachid Ghezzal – as the man who scored their title winning goal, returns from English Premier League Leicester on a now permanent basis.
However, it is once again their dealings in the loan market which have generated the most attention and the capture of Miralem Pjanic from Barcelona, is one that will surely aid their bid to defend the Super Lig crown.
Which Teams are Favourites to Win Turkish Super Lig 2022/23
At the start of the season, it was Besiktas and Galatasaray that were seen as the favourites to win the title after their incredible battle in the 2020/21 campaign. The title being decided on goal difference in a season in which the two sides lost 16 games out of a possible 80 between them seemed to hint at them once again fighting in the upper echelons of the table this season. That has been anything but the case though.
At the time of writing, Besiktas sit in eighth in the league with 45 points, a massive 35 short of Trabzonspor at the top. If you thought that was bad, Galatasaray sit even lower down in 10th with 38 points. Incredibly, the teams that finished as the champions and runners-up last season are actually closer to the relegation zone than they are the top of the table.
The current favourites to win the title are Trabzonspor. The side have won 21, drawn seven and lost two of their matches, picking up 70 points so far. With Trabzonspor 15 points clear of Konyaspor in second and with only eight games left, the league title looks all but secured for the side.
The incredibly unpredictable nature of the league means that Super Lig betting tips and Super Lig predictions are made even more important as the league is clearly not as straightforward as the standard top two fighting for the title every single season.
With this in mind, ensure you back the right Super Lig betting tips and Super Lig predictions, as this would have likely seen you nail the struggles of last season’s top two, and perhaps it would have seen you backing Trabzonspor for the title too.
Which Teams are in Danger of Relegation?
In terms of relegation, the trapdoor is once again going to be wide open, as four teams will suffer the ignominy of the drop at the end of the season and with the promoted trio of Adana Demirspor, Giresunspor and Altay now in the top flight, they will want to stay there for quite a while.
Of course, what they want and what will happen, are usually two different things within the world of football and therefore, the smart money will be on these teams heading back down a division at the first time of asking.
This means there is one other berth on offer and although each Turkish Super Lig club will be doing their absolute best to avoid it, it could mean bad news for Çaykur Rizespor or Göztepe at the end of the season.
Turkish Super Lig players to keep an eye on this season
Without question, the player that everyone will be keeping an eye this season is Miralem Pjanic and with the Bosnian star linking up with Besiktas for the 2021/22 campaign, a lot will be expected of the 31-year-old.
With his move to Barcelona never quite working out, it is fair to say that Pjanic will have a point to prove and for those detractors who have written him off, the Super Lig could be the ideal playground in which to show his wares. Look out for the midfielder in your Super Lig betting tips and Super Lig predictions this season.
While if there is some additional focus lying spare, it will likely be placed on the shoulders of Diego Rossi. With the 23-year-old showing more signs of maturity as of late, he will look to push Fenerbahce closer to a title winning position this season.
