Ibrox hosts season’s first Old Firm clash

Celtic

Brendan Rodgers returned to Celtic Park in the summer. He steered his new side to wins in their opening two league matches but were knocked out of the League Cup by Kilmarnock and were held to a draw by St Johnstone.Rodgers will be hoping that his team can bounce back and  go to Ibrox and get something. This would set them up for a title defence and for a tilt at the group stages of the Champions League.

Celtic have something of a defensive injury crisis. Cameron Carter-Vickers and Reo Hatate picked up injuries against Aberdeen, Alistair Johnston is still out after surgery during the summer and Stephen Welsh could be out for two months with ankle ligament damage.

Rangers

Like their rivals, Rangers have suffered at the hands of Kilmarnock in the opening stages of the season, Micheal Beale’s side coming away from Rugby Park empty handed on the opening day. Beale’s side have bounced back by comfortably beating Livingstone in the league, progressing to the qualifying play-off in the Champions League and defeating Greenock Morton in the League Cup. They will have the second leg of their Champions League play-off against PSV Eindhoven to negotiate the Wednesday before the Old Firm game.

Rangers have looked disjointed so far this season but as their injury problems ease and their new players settle in Beale will be hoping his team find some rythme.

Prediction

Despite their League Cup exit and their defensive injury crisis, Celtic look in marginally better shape than their rivals. However, home advantage counts for a lot in the white hot atmosphere of an Old Firm game and as Beale settles his new signings in Rangers will develop more fluency. This one could end with honours even in a score draw.
