Chelsea look to show they can be in the mix for Europe in City clash
Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino continues to search for the right blend with his expensively assembled squad as the Pensioners host Manchester City in the Premier League. Betting.com bring you all you need to know ahead of the action..
Chelsea
Chelsea have shown signs of improvement under Pochettino after a chaotic and ultimately disappointing campaign last season. However, taking their chances has been an issue as they look to find the right balance. The Blues will be aiming to get back into the European places this season and they undoubtedly have the talent to pose any side in the league a problem should they click. Although, despite the scoreline, they were not convincing in Monday night’s win at Spurs, the victory will come as a huge boost and my end up being a turning point.
Ben Chilwell (thigh), Romeo Lavia (ankle), Wesley Fofana (knee), Christopher Nkunku (knee), Trevoh Chalobah (thigh) and Carney Chukwuemeka (knee) are all set to miss out. Enzo Fernandez is doubtful though Armando Broja could be sufficiently recovered from a knee problem to make the bench. Reece James pulled out of the England squad, but this was a precautionary measure and he should be fit to be involved.
Manchester City
City suffered a blip (by their standards) when they lost two league matches in succession to Wolves and Arsenal, in a spell which also saw them knocked out of the EFL Cup by Newcastle United. This, however, coincided with the absence of Rodri through suspension. Since then Pep Guardiola’s side have looked somewhere near their best. Their last Premier League outing saw them hit six past Bournemouth. They enjoyed a comfortable victory over Young Boys on Tuesday in the Champions League.
John Stones faces more time on the sidelines with a thigh injury. His absence will be keenly felt by City, despite the size and depth of their squad. Manuel Akanji (back), Kevin de Bruyne (thigh) and Sergio Gomez (ankle) are also out.
Prediction
I stated earlier that Chelsea have the talent to trouble any side in the league. This is true, however, Man City have the talent and organisation to go to the toughest venues in the Premier League and around Europe and come away with a win. This is what I expect to happen on this occasion. Away win.
