Second favourites England keep places open for Stokes and Archer for T20 World Cup
  • Mott confident in Stokes and Archer
  • Matchwinner Stokes hopes to be fit, Archer’s pace could make difference
  • T20 World Cup Scheduled for June

England coach Matthew Mott has expressed unwavering confidence in the abilities of Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer, despite their ongoing injury recoveries, stating that their places will be reserved for the 2024 T20 World Cup. England are currently priced at 4/1 as joint second favourites with bet365.

Stokes and Archer could be difference makers for England

Stokes, currently recuperating from knee surgery, is aiming to lead England in the Test series against India in January. Archer, who has been sidelined with an elbow injury since March, continues to be a pivotal player for England, according to Mott.

Mott commended Stokes as a “rare” talent with incredible match-winning abilities in every aspect of the game. He particularly emphasised the strategic advantage of having a seam bowler in the top six, providing flexibility in team balance. Mott expressed that choosing Stokes for the T20 World Cup is a logical decision, given his multifaceted contributions.

Speaking about Archer, Mott highlighted the bowler’s “box-office pace” and his ability to bring variation to the game. Despite Archer’s injury setbacks, Mott stressed the immense impact Archer has on the team when he is on the field. The coach’s sentiments suggest a strong inclination to include Archer in the T20 World Cup squad, underscoring the importance of his dynamic bowling skills.

The 2024 T20 World Cup is scheduled to take place in June in the West Indies and the United States. While Mott’s confidence in Stokes and Archer is evident, their actual inclusion in the squad will depend on their fitness levels and performances leading up to the tournament.

Betting Implications

England have struggled with white ball cricket lately, with a poor showing at the World Cup and a series defeat to the the West Indies. However, their showing in the T20 series against the West Indies has been a little better, despite losing the first two matches. At the time of writing, England are joint second favourites for the T20 World Cup with ODI World Champions Australia,  behind India, runners up in the ODI Cricket World Cup. Bettors will need to look at how England perform during the rest of the winter and will need to look at how Stokes and Archer perform once they come back into the side and analyse whether the duo can make England genuine contenders.

At the time of writing, bet365 have India as favourites at 11/4, England and Australia 4/1 and South Africa 7/1.
