Hodgson leaves Palace
Crystal Palace Football Club has bid farewell to Roy Hodgson, who stepped down from his role as manager to facilitate the club’s plans to expedite the appointment of a new managerial figure.
Hodgson, aged 76, reportedly fell ill during a training session on Thursday amid speculation surrounding his imminent dismissal. The decision comes amidst a turbulent period for the Eagles, who have suffered 10 defeats in their last 16 Premier League fixtures, currently placing them 16th in the league standings, with a precarious five-point cushion above the relegation zone.
Expressing his sentiments, Hodgson stated, “This club is very special and means so much to me,” emphasising his affection and dedication to the team. The managerial duties for the upcoming match against Everton will be handled by Hodgson’s assistants, Paddy McCarthy and Ray Lewington.
The frontrunner to succeed Hodgson is Oliver Glasner, aged 49, a former Eintracht Frankfurt manager, who notably secured the Europa League title during his tenure with the club in 2022. Despite his achievements, Glasner departed from Frankfurt following a challenging season characterised by a prolonged winless streak in the Bundesliga.

Hodgson’s departure marks the end of his second stint at Crystal Palace, which began with a short-term deal during the final 10 games of the previous season. His decision to continue managing the team for the 2023-24 campaign underscores his commitment to the club, as noted by chairman Steve Parish.
However, recent controversies, including criticism of Hodgson’s decisions regarding player substitutions and handling of injuries, have intensified scrutiny of his leadership. Nonetheless, Hodgson remains respected for his contributions, having steered Crystal Palace to Premier League survival over several seasons.
As the club embarks on the search for a new manager, the focus shifts towards reshaping the team’s direction and revitalising their performance in the Premier League. The departure of Hodgson, coupled with the potential appointment of Glasner, signifies a pivotal moment in Crystal Palace’s managerial landscape and signals a new chapter in their journey.
