- Brighton set to secure Fati loan ahead of Spurs
- Boost for Brighton ahead of first European campaign
- Barca look to clear squad space for Cancelo
Spanish forward Ansu Fati appears poised to embark on a surprising season-long loan spell with Brighton from Barcelona.
Fati set for season-long loan
Fati’s standing at Barcelona has dwindled, with the club needing to free up space in their squad to secure the services of Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo on loan.
The arrangement between Brighton and the 20-year-old does not include a mandatory purchase clause.
While Tottenham had also been associated with Fati, it appears he has been swayed by Brighton’s playing style under manager Roberto de Zerbi.
Should the deal proceed as anticipated, it would mark a significant triumph for Brighton. The club is gearing up for their debut appearance in European football this season after qualifying for the Europa League.
Positive deal for all concerned as Fati looks to get back on track
Born in Guinea-Bissau but choosing to represent Spain, Fati was a part of Spain’s World Cup squad the previous year. Widely regarded as one of the most promising young talents in football, Fati signed an extension with Barcelona in 2021, binding him until 2027 and encompassing a hefty €1 billion buyout clause.
However, things haven’t gone as well for Fati over the last couple of years, with the Spanish international having suffered a number of injuries. The move could help him recapture the promise of the early stages of his career which could be of short-term benefit to Brighton and, potentially, of long-term benefit to Barcelona.
Fati will give Brighton a different option in attack and greater strength in depth. This will also, hopefully, reduce the blow of Julio Enciso’s absence through injury. He will also add some vital European experience ahead of de Zerbi’s side’s Europa League campaign. Punters looking to back Brighton for outrights or on a match-to.match basis will need to weigh up the impact this could have.
