England struggle to break down Ukraine
  • Attacking play didn’t quite click – Southgate
  • First international goal for Walker
  • England currently among favourites for Euro 2024

England manager Gareth Southgate acknowledged that his team struggled to find their rhythm in attack as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Ukraine in a Euro 2024 qualifier.

The match, which took place in Poland due to the ongoing Russian invasion in Ukraine, saw Oleksandr Zinchenko open the scoring for the hosts. However, England’s Kyle Walker levelled the score with his first international goal, after a superb ball from Harry Kane.

“We’re not going to win every game by fours and sevens,” Southgate stated.

“That was a really good test – away from home, very passionate atmosphere, quite a few changes forced from the last game.

“Sometimes, especially with attacking play, it doesn’t quite click. We know that the patterns that we worked during the week are what we always do, so it’s not that we approach the game in a different way.”

Betting Implications

This draw marks the end of England’s perfect record in Group C, having won all four of their previous matches. Despite this, they maintain a strong position at the top of the standings with 13 points, leaving them six points ahead of second-placed Ukraine. This leaves England in a very strong position. At the time of writing most bookies have England at 1/10 or 1/12 to win the group.

Southgate’s side are also among the favourites to win the tournament as a whole. At the time of writing bet365 have both England and France at 9/2 to win Euro 2024. Germany, who have just sacked their manager Hansi Flick are currently 13/2, with Spain, who scored an emphatic victory over Georgia on Friday 9/1.

England also remain narrow favourites to win when they visit in-form Scotland for the 150th Anniversary Heritage Match on Tuesday. They have a friendly against Australia at the start of the next international break before returning to Euro 2024 action.
