Football Betting Tips for La Liga 2022/23

Due to the quality of players and the level of football that is on show, La Liga has long been considered one of the most popular leagues when it comes to both viewing audiences and betting tips.

While one of the more interesting things about La Liga is that it has changed from being a high-scoring league to a more defensive natured competition and this is the opposite compared to its “Big Five” counterparts, as average goal tallies have stayed largely the same across Italy, Germany, France, and England.

This insight has created plenty of interesting betting opportunities and perhaps more importantly, for experts on the topic of Spanish football betting, it has also been a great way to profit over the past few years.

Most bettors are largely familiar with Barcelona and Real Madrid dominating the league for several decades, but there have always been teams lurking in the shadows too. In the early 2000’s we saw the rise of Valencia while Atletico Madrid are now considered the third force of Spanish football.

Betting on La Liga quite often is a battle of the favourites and the underdogs, but this is where experts are allowed to shine with sharp La Liga predictions, based on an accurate understanding of the team’s real value. Of course, with Barcelona no longer possessing Lionel Messi, the La Liga betting landscape is set to change.

Who are the best bookmakers for the Spanish La Liga?

La Liga is one of the most popular football leagues in the world and that means every single bookmaker out there will offer La Liga odds. What we instead recommend when you choose a bookmaker to bet on La Liga, is that you choose a bonus that suits you, or find a special promotion that will benefit you.

We can vouch for all our recommended bookmakers, and you can see a few of them down below. While should you prefer, you can head over to our bookmaker section, where you can see their current welcome bonuses, promotions and read our extensive reviews of them.

Previous Season Recap

While although the race for the La Liga title can often be considered just a two-horse race, there are rare occasions in which a trio of teams contest for the richest prize in Spanish football and last season was one of those rarities.

With Barcelona and Real Madrid not quite operating at their usual high standards, it was left for Atletico Madrid to take full advantage and as they raced into an early season lead, many felt the La Liga trophy was as good as won by Diego Simeone and his players.

However, if there is one thing that Spanish football is never in short supply of, it’s drama and with Atletico stuttering at the business end of the campaign, some La Liga predictions suggested that they would eventually be pipped by one or both of their more established rivals.

With that said, the final few weeks were more an exercise in who actually wanted to win the league, as points were dropped by all three challengers and with both Barcelona and Real Madrid fluffing their own lines, it was left for Atletico Madrid to finally complete the task and claim the title.

Such was the trio’s propensity for dropping points, they almost let Sevilla in through the backdoor and had they held their nerve in the final few weeks, they could have well clinched a dramatic and rather unlikely La Liga title success.

The perennial Europa League winners had to make do with a fourth-place finish and their vice like grip on Europe’s secondary club trophy was finally prised away, as compatriots Villarreal clinched overall success by beating Manchester United in last season’s final.

Notable Transfers

When Lionel Messi long departed from Barcelona, the Argentine goal focus now lay on the shoulders of Sergio Aguero. The former Manchester City forward, however, suffered from cardiac arrhythmia and never came back to the pitch. The combination of breakneck pace, ferocious strength, and excellent crossing, that new signing, Adama Traore, will bring to Barcelona may be something to consider when making La Liga predictions. Pierre Emerick Aubameyang has been putting on a good show since taking up the Barca shirt, and will likely continue to do so.

Looking at their arch rivals, Real Madrid’s biggest capture of the summer is arguably David Alaba and with the Austrian arriving from Bayern Munich on a free, he will be tasked with replacing Sergio Ramos in defence.

In terms of the largest individual expenditure of last summer transfer window, that accolade falls to Rodrigo de Paul and his move from Udinese to defending champions Atletico Madrid. With that now complete, he will look to help his new employers win successive La Liga titles at the end of the season.

Which Teams are Favourites to Win Spanish La Liga 2022/23

A fair share of our La Liga predictions covers the league winner bet. And when it comes to the topic of favourites for this season’s race to be La Liga champions, the pendulum has certainly swung back in the favour of Real Madrid and that is due to one rather obvious reason.

That of course is the transfer of Lionel Messi to PSG and with his departure from the Camp Nou being a rather shocking one, it has left Barcelona in a position where they will likely be catch up from the off.

Then again, with Barcelona’s debt issues this season and their struggle to even register new players, even a top-four finish and subsequent return to the Champions League for 2022/23 will be considered a relative success.

While when it comes to the defending champions Atletico Madrid, they will certainly consider themselves in the mix and although they are currently third favourites at the time of writing, they cannot be ruled out of title contention either.

Which Teams are in Danger of Relegation?

When it comes to the subject of relegation, the theory is often that what came up must also come back down and although that may be the case as far as Rayo Vallecano are concerned, it may be better news for the two other promoted outfits from last season.

With Espanyol and Mallorca also returning from the Segunda Liga, they look in a far stronger position when it comes to gaining survival at the end of the season. Most La Liga predictions, therefore, tip the likes of Levante and Cadiz to be worth bettors’ consideration when it comes to the drop.

That is not to say that Espanyol and Mallorca will have it easy this season, if anything, far from it. However, with previous top-flight experience within the squad, they will have the required nous to avoid the ignominy of relegation this May.

La Liga Players to Keep an Eye on This Season

It is fair to say that La Liga is now embarking on a new era, as the duo of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi ply their trades in other leagues and the question now, is who will step up to be the next global megastar?

It may not even be someone who is considered to be a fearsome forward and instead, the next talisman of La Liga could find himself playing in a role further down the field. According to some La Liga predictions, it may well be Frenkie De Jong who steps into the limelight.

The former Ajax midfielder is arguably the most valuable player in La Liga right now and he will have to carry the burden that comes with Messi moving to PSG and doing his best to lead his team to glory – something that could be a rather impossible job.

When it comes to other midfield talents, another Barcelona player maybe another one to watch this season and although he may only be 18 years old at present, Pedri is being tipped to go all the way to the absolute top.

While Atletico Madrid certainly have their share of exciting talent, none more so than Joao Felix and at 21-year-old, the naivety of youth has now been replaced by the experience that comes with winning a Spanish league crown.

Joining him as one to watch this season is Marcos Llorente and at 26 years of age, the midfielder is really starting to hit his career peak and one wonders if a move to a true European giant is not all that far away either.

Of course, you cannot ignore Real Madrid when it comes to star players and it will be interesting to see what will be made of Gareth Bale this season, as he returns from his loan move at Tottenham and once again links up with former manager Carlo Ancelotti at the Santiago Bernabeu.
