IPL 2024: Preview

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) gears up for its 17th season in 2024, anticipation is high for another thrilling instalment of the world’s most popular franchise cricket league. Since its inception in 2008, the IPL has continually elevated the standard of cricket entertainment, captivating fans worldwide.

The inaugural IPL in 2008 saw the Rajasthan Royals (RR) clinch the title, but despite their early success, they’ve struggled to secure another championship in subsequent seasons.

In the 2023 final, the Gujarat Titans (GT), the defending champions, clashed with the formidable Chennai Super Kings (CSK) led by MS Dhoni. CSK emerged victorious, claiming their fifth IPL title, a feat they now share with their arch-rivals, the Mumbai Indians (MI).

The excitement for IPL 2024 surged as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) unveiled the fixtures on February 22. The announcement ceremony, graced by ICC CEO Geoff Allardyce and BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, marked the official countdown to the tournament.

The season opener promises fireworks as the reigning champions, Chennai Super Kings, collide with Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. This blockbuster clash sets the stage for what’s sure to be a riveting campaign.

With India’s general elections scheduled for April and May, the BCCI has strategically scheduled the first 21 matches of IPL 2024 within the tournament’s initial 15 days, ensuring minimal overlap with the electoral process.

IPL 2024: Format

Here’s a glimpse of the format for IPL 2024:

  • Number of Teams: A total of 10 teams will vie for supremacy in IPL 2024.
  • Round-Robin Home and Away Format: Each team will face the other nine teams twice, once at home and once away, resulting in a total of 18 league matches per team.
  • Top Four Qualify for Playoffs: The top four teams in the league standings will advance to the playoffs, determined by their performance during the round-robin stage.
  • Qualifier 1: The top two teams will compete in Qualifier 1, with the winner securing a direct berth in the final.
  • Eliminator: The third and fourth-placed teams will clash in the Eliminator, vying to stay alive in the playoffs.
  • Qualifier 2: The loser of Qualifier 1 will face the winner of the Eliminator in Qualifier 2, battling for a spot in the final.
  • Final: The ultimate showdown will feature the winner of Qualifier 1 against the victor of Qualifier 2, crowning the IPL 2024 champion.

With the stage set for fierce competition and memorable moments, cricket enthusiasts worldwide eagerly await the spectacle that is IPL 2024.

Pre-season prediction

Chennai Super Kings were victorious last season and we think that they will be the team to beat this time round too. So we are going for them to win. Looking at the current prices, Rajasthan Royals might be a good outside bet and are worth backing each-way.
