Football Betting Tips for ISL Season 2022/23

The 2020/21 season saw Mumbai City claim their very first ISL title as they beat ATK Mohun Bagan in the finals, as well as bagging the League Winners Shield. The table last season was very tight at the top and in the middle, and we could see a similar close battle again for the 2021/22 campaign.

The 2021/22 Indian Super League season is due to commence in November 2021 and will conclude later in March 2022.

The Indian Super League currently features 11 teams: ATK Mohun Bagan FC, Bengaluru FC, Chennaiyin FC, Hyderabad FC, Mumbai City FC, NorthEast United FC, Kerala Blasters FC, Sporting Club East Bengal, Odisha FC, FC Goa, and Jamshedpur FC. The 2021/22 ISL season has started in November 2021 and the final stages are set for March 2022.

Mumbai City are the current defending champions after they successfully held on to win their first ever title last season.

Mumbai City also put on an impressive display away from home last season as they beat Odisha 6-1 to claim one of the best away wins of the season.

With 115 games played last season, a total of 298 goals were scored which produces an average of 2.59 goals per game.

There have also been some noteworthy changes from last season. Clubs can now only sign between 4 and 6 foreign players to their squad, which must also include one player at minimum from an Asian Football Confederation nation. Additionally, only 4 foreign players are ever allowed on the pitch in a single match. This means teams must include 7 domestic players in their match-day squad at a minimum. Teams may also have up to a maximum of 35 players in their overall squad and must also have 3 goalkeepers at minimum. The All India Football Federation have also renewed the caps on player salaries.

Previous Season Recap

The 2020/21 campaign saw Mumbai City take the ISL title after a very close battle with ATK Mohun Bagan. Both teams finished at the top of the table on equal points, with only a small goal difference separating the sides. It was Mumbai City that took the title after a successful run in the playoffs, beating Goa and later ATK Mohun Bagan in the final.

Odisha finished last season at the very bottom of the table, managing 2 wins, 6 draws, and 12 losses and were 5 points off their closest competitors. East Bengal and Kerala Blasters also finished close to the bottom of the table, equalling each other on 17 points with a minor goal difference giving East Bengal that extra place. Goa just missed out on 3rd position to NorthEast United as one final win for the team would have advanced them into this position, although they still qualified for the ISL playoffs.

Notable Transfers

In preparation for their title defence this season, Mumbai City have signed a number of players to strengthen the squad. Attackers Igor Angulo and Cassinho each signed to strengthen their forward options. Notably, Mumbai City have lost their prominent attacking midfielder Hugo Boumous who signed for rivals ATK Mohun Bagan.

ATK Mohun Bagan also brought in centre-forward Liston Colaco, right-back Ashutosh Mehta, and defensive midfielder Deepak Tangri. This gives them a lot of fresh new faces for the ongoing campaign. Notably, the side has lost a couple of important attacking players through the likes of attacking midfielder Javi Hernández and Edu García. Admittedly, these losses will make for some unfavorable Indian Super League predictions for the Mariners.

Which Teams are Favourites to Win ISL 2022/23

Mumbai City

As the current defending champions in the ISL, Mumbai City are sure to be favourites to win the title once again this season. Although it will not be an easy road to success with lots of competitors looking to take the title away from them, Mumbai City could hold off the challengers and claim a second title. The previous season was a very close one with Mumbai City topping the table but with ATK Mohun Bagan close on their heels. Our Indian Super League predictions indicate that these teams could have another very close rivalry again this season.

ATK Mohun Bagan

Just missing out on the top spot of the ISL table last season, ATK Mohun Bagan came extremely close to taking the 2020/21 title as they made it to the playoff finals to challenge Mumbai City. Despite losing out last season, ATK Mohun Bagan will surely be looking to improve upon an already impressive run and upset Mumbai City. With the recent signings brought in to reshape the squad, ATK Mohun Bagan appear to be in a well-placed position to strike the defending champions.

FC Goa

FC Goa had a pretty good run last season as they finished in 4th position and were able to advance to the ISL playoffs. Finishing their 2020/21 campaign just 2 points away from 3rd and experiencing just 3 losses throughout the season does put them in a decent enough position where they might start looking to challenge for the very top spots this season.

NorthEast United

NorthEast United had a very promising end to their 2020/21 season as they finished 3rd in the table. Despite missing out in the ISL playoffs, NorthEast United could walk with their heads held high. With such a successful display last season that saw them finish close to the league leaders. It’s still debatable, but some Indian Super League predictions suggest that NorthEast United could potentially put on an even more successful display this season and might even challenge for the top spots.

Which Teams Will Struggle?

Odisha

The 2020/21 season did not go awfully well for Odisha as they finished off their campaign at the very bottom of the ISL table. Over the course of 20 matches played, Odisha managed just 2 wins, 6 draws, and 12 losses. The team also finished their season with the lowest goal difference in the league with -19. Odisha also experienced the longest run without a win at 10 games. With their previous season’s run of form, Odisha might be risking another bottom table finish again for the 2021/22 season.

East Bengal

East Bengal managed to scrape by last season in 9th position as they finished on equal points to Kerala Blasters. Although it was a very close competition in the middle of the table last season, East Bengal were only 5 points away from the bottom of the table and 10 points away from 6th. East Bengal could be mixing at the lower ends of the table once again in the 2021/22 season.

Kerala Blasters

Much like East Bengal, Kerala Blasters experienced a fairly underwhelming season during the 2020/21 campaign as they finished in 10th position. Last season, Kerala Blasters also suffered a hefty defeat at Hyderabad FC where the score ended up at 4-0, the highest scoring home loss of the season. If their run of form does not change for the better, even the least accurate Indian Super League predictions tip Kerala Blasters to be another team facing the bottom of the table for the 2021/22 season.

ISL Players to Keep Our Eyes on

Prediction for Top Goalscorer

Roy Krishna

The reliable striker for ATK Mohun Bagan has made a decent impact for his club. Since joining in 2020, Krishna has managed to bag himself 14 goals in 23 appearances. This outstanding performance put him at the very top of the goalscorer’s table last season, and he will surely be looking to lead his team to take the title.

Igor Angulo

The Spanish striker for Mumbai City is another candidate for the top goalscorer position for the 2021/22 season. His success in front of goal last season with 13 goals put him in 2nd position in the top goalscorer table and only 1 goal away from the top spot. Angulo will surely be looking to improve this season as his side Mumbai City will be eager to defend their title.

Bartholomew Ogbeche

The Nigerian forward, currently playing for Hyderabad, made some noticeable waves last season with 8 goals for reigning champions Mumbai City. Ogbeche could be in a good position to score even more goals this season and potentially challenge for the top spots in the ISL top goalscorer table.
