Football Betting Tips for Greek Super League Season 2022/23

As many punters predicted Olympiacos managed to retain the title last season, and will be heavy favourites for the league once again. Olympiacos will also feature in the 2021/22 UEFA Europa League whilst three Greek Super League sides will feature in the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League (UECL). The extra European football will be a test for the smaller Greek squads.

Olympiacos are the defending champions and heavy favourites to win the league. Their dominance makes betting on an outright league win a likely winner, but stakes will need to be high to return anything of note. PAOK, Aris, AEK Athens, and Panathinaikos are habitual top-half sides that could shake up the top five or six.

Last season was a very close competition at the bottom-end of the table which eventually saw Athlitiki Enosi Larissa relegated. AEL had an unfortunate end to their four years in the top tier as they finished the regular season with just three wins from 26 games. Meanwhile, Ionikos were crowned champions and promoted to the Greek Super League after suffering just three defeats.

Which are Considered Best Bookmakers for Greek Super League

There is no shortage of bookmakers to choose from when it comes to Greek football betting. You will find that the best bookmakers offer great bonuses and pay out especially well for big wins.

Previous Season Recap

As expected, the 2020/21 Greek Super League season saw Olympiacos successfully defend their title. Olympiacos also managed an impressive 21-match unbeaten run as well as a 7-match continuous winning streak.

Olympiacos’ Youssef El-Arabi was the top goalscorer, finishing with 22 goals to his name. PAOK finished a distant second and a title-push is likely beyond them, or any other side in the division.

Aris Thessaloniki finished third last season – their highest top tier finish this century, just three years after promotion, building on consecutive fifth place finishes. However, they will have to contend with a six-point deduction this campaign. PAS Giannina and Apollon Smyrnis finished mid-table after being promoted from the second tier of Greek football the previous season and AEL were relegated.

Notable Transfers

Aris Thessaloniki recently purchased centre-forward Aboubakar Kamara from Fulham. Things didn’t quite work out for Kamara at Fulham, especially in the Premier League but his physical presence will be a terrific addition to the Aris frontline.

Olympiacos have introduced a series of new players to help bolster their title defence. Most notably, Henry Onyekuru arrives from Monaco and offers Ligue 1 experience at just 24. Olympiacos have also secured Michal Karbownik and Rony Lopes, adding quality and depth to the side. One notable departure was José Sá to Wolves.

PAOK have strengthened their attacking options ahead of the new season with the arrival of Nélson Oliveira on loan from fellow Greek Super League team AEK Athens, as well as Alexandru Mitrita, and Chuba Akpom. These additions partly compensate for the loss of Christos Tzolis to Norwich for approximately £10m.

Which Teams are Favourites to Win Greek Super League 2022/23

Olympiacos

Typically, Olympiacos are tipped to be the top team in the Greek Super League once again for the 2021/22 season. The squad has been bolstered with several notable transfers over the summer including Henry Onyekuru and Pierre Kunde. In goal, José Sá has been replaced with the equally capable Tomáš Vaclík, leaving Olympiakos with a squad more than capable of living up to their “favourites” tag. Betting on Olympiakos to be the top team should only end one way.

PAOK

PAOK put up a decent fight and ended the season 4 points ahead of AEK Athens. PAOK won the domestic Greek Football Cup last season, signalling that they have a competitive squad. PAOK have made the most of the recent transfer window as they brought in a diverse range of attacking and midfield options. The likes of Alexandru Mitrita, Chuba Akpom, and Jasmin Kurtic will help strengthen their squad making PAOK the most likely challengers to Olympiakos.

AEK Athens

AEK Athens have been nothing but consistent in the Greek Super League over several years. The AEK Athens squad has certainly been developed at the back as a number of defensive players have arrived over the summer. Aside from Sergio Araujo and Clément Michelin, most of AEK Athens’ summer signings have been free transfers, making good use of the free agents market. It would be a stretch to see AEK compete for the title but it’s not unthinkable.

Panathinaikos

Panathinaikos got off to somewhat of a shaky start last season before finding their groove and cementing themselves in 5th position. Only Olympiakos have won the domestic Greek Cup more times than Panathinaikos, but the gap between the two sides is rather large as things stand. Panathinaikos have had a less successful transfer window when compared to other top teams in the league and might lack enough quality to compete. A bet on an outright title win isn’t advisable here.

Which Teams are in Danger of Relegation?

Panetolikos

Panetolikos came very close to relegation last time around as they finished in 12th position during the regular season, dropping further still to 13th after the play-offs. The team just managed to retain their place in the Greek Super League by the skin of their teeth, inching one point ahead of relegated side AEL. Many experts suspect Panetolikos will be the next team to be relegated to the Greek Super League 2.

OFI Crete

OFI Crete finished last season with 8 wins and 17 losses from 30 matches, and suffered both the longest run without a win as well as the longest run of defeats. The team was able to remain in the top-flight division for another season but there is definite speculation as to whether they can stay up after such poor runs. Backing OFI Crete for the drop could provide decent value.

Ionikos

As a newly promoted team, the risk of relegation is high and Ionikos are among the favourites to go straight back down. The competition is always tough for newly promoted teams.

As champions of the Greek Super League 2 Ionikos may just surprise the competition and stay away from the relegation zone to retain a spot in Greece’s top division.

Super League Players to Keep an Eye on this Season

Prediction for Top Goalscorer

Youssef El-Arabi

Since joining Olympiacos in 2019, El-Arabi has managed 42 goals in his 68 appearances for the club. The Moroccan was the 2020/21 top goalscorer in the Greek Super League with 22 goals during the regular season and play-offs. El-Arabi’s scoring was so prolific last season that he finished 9 goals ahead of the next-highest scorer. El-Arabi looks odds on to do the same again this time around and betting on him to do so would return a tidy profit.

Karim Ansarifard

Ansarifard joined AEK Athens in 2020 and made an instant impact for the team, producing 13 goals in 35 appearances during the regular season and play-offs. The number 10 also had a brief stint at Olympiacos during the 17/18 season where he managed 18 goals for the club. Ansarifard knows the league well and will have an outside shot at the golden ball, helped by playing for one of the nation’s top sides.

Giorgos Masouras

Masouras has already established himself as a reliable winger for his club since joining in 2019. He isn’t the focal attacking player in his team, and that will hamper his chances of finishing as top scorer, but he’s an interesting alternative to El-Arabi for the golden boot.

Prediction for Top Assister

Kostas Fortounis

Kostas Fortounis has been at Olympiacos for many years now and has remained a reliable provider in that time. Last season he ranked top in the assists table with an impressive 11 and if you’re going to be betting on anyone to top the assists charts, Fourtounis has to be heavily considered.

Petros Mantalos

AEK Athens’ Greek midfielder, Mantalos, came a close 2nd to Fourtounis last season with nine assists in the 2020/21 season. AEK Athens scored well in general last season and have the fire-power to keep the pace with top sides in the league.

Henry Onyekuru

New signing Henry Onyekuru could have a significant impact on the league. Olympiakos’ new recruit managed 5 assists from 18 appearances last campaign at Monaco and Galatasaray. Playing for the top side in the league, Onyekuru is well worth backing in the top assister market.
