Cymru Premier
While Wales has a rich and storied history when it comes to international football, the same cannot be said for domestic matters. With their league setup only being in place since 1992, it is one of the more nascent competitions within Europe. Of course, when you think of Welsh club football, your first thought is likely to be that of either Cardiff or Swansea City and with neither of these two playing within their own domestic league, it is one of the quirkier stories within the British game.
With no previous league setup in Wales to call upon, the two aforementioned clubs and others such as Wrexham and Newport entered the English football pyramid instead and as a consequence, would have the ability to play in European competition by virtue of winning the Welsh Cup. However, their ability to play in one nation’s league and another’s cup was one that would eventually be curtailed. With the League of Wales being formed back in 1992, the clubs were given an ultimatum.
They could either join the League of Wales and still earn the right to play in Europe via the FAW or they could stay in within the Football League and be considered English representatives as far as UEFA were concerned. With the League of Wales having such little ability to create revenue, it was a rather simple decision for the Welsh domestic powerhouses and perhaps unsurprisingly they decided to go it alone in England.
This meant that a new era of Welsh domestic football began nearly three decades ago and although the League of Wales is no longer the moniker it operates under, it is still the top league within the country. Now the competition is called the Cymru Premier and it has a number of similarities with the Scottish Premiership. First, it also consists of 12 teams and secondly, there is a regular and post-split season.
Unlike in Scotland, the Cymru Premier sees a split after two rounds of fixtures (once home and once away in a double round-robin) and from there the six teams in the Championship group once again play each other twice, as do the six teams in the relegation group. The winner of the Championship group will be crowned winners of the Cymru Premier for that season, while the team that finishes bottom of the Relegation group will in most cases suffer demotion to the tier below.
