Magpies host Dortmund in Matchday 3

Both sides had victories in their domestic leagues this weekend ahead of the Matchday 3 clash on Tyneside.

Newcastle United

Newcastle have managed a series of injuries and suspensions really well to get back on track after a stuttering start to the season. The Magpies have won six from an eight game unbeaten run in all competitions, sit sixth in the Premier League and are top of UEFA Champions League Group F. Eddie Howe’s side record a resounding 4-1 win over PSG in Matchday 2, as St James’ Park saw one of the greatest nights in the club’s modern history. Their opening Champions League match saw them hold AC Milan to a goalless draw in the San Siro. They come into the game on the back of a comfortable 4-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Eddie Howe’s side have ongoing injury issues, Sven Botman (knee), Joe Willock (hamstring) and Lewis Miley (glandular fever)  will not make the game, while Harvey Barnes is a long-term absentee with a foot injury. It remains to see whether any potential suspension for Sandro Tonali will render the Italian midfielder unavailable. However, Howe has stated that he expects the Italian to be available. Alexander Isak was fit enough to come off the bench on Saturday after pulling out of the Sweden squad with a groin injury. Joelinton returned to action on Saturday. Isak may have a point to prove after a disappointing spell at Dortmund early in his career.

Borussia Dortmund

Dortmund sit fourth in the Bundesliga and head to St James’ Park with four wins and a draw in their last five matches in all competitions. They beat Werder Bremen 1-0 at home on Friday evening, giving them a few hours extra rest compared to Newcastle.

Their Champions League results so far saw them lose 2-0 away to PSG and record a goalless draw at home to Milan.

Dortmund could be without Youssoufa Moukoko with  a thigh strain for the trip to Tyneside, meaning Niclas Fullkrug could deputise.

Prediction

Newcastle are looking strong at the moment, especially at home. However, Dortmund are an experienced Champions League side and will be desperate to get some points on the board. A low scoring draw could be the most likely outcome.
