Celtic host Atletico Madrid
In six meetings between the clubs down the years Atleti have had the better of things, with four wins and two draws. This is the fourth time the clubs have been drawn together. Despite the lack of regular meetings, the matches tend to be spicy affairs after a tempestuous first meeting between the clubs in the old European Cup in 1974.
Celtic
Celtic have made a steady start to the season. They are unbeaten in the league and are seven points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership having won eight out of nine matches. However, it has not all been plain sailing for Brendan Rodgers since his return, with the Hoops suffering an early exit in the Scottish League Cup. They lost their opening E match 2-0 away at Feyenoord.
Central defender Gustaf Lagerbielke is set to return for Celtic, having played and scored for Sweden in the last international break. He missed the defeat to Lazio following his sending off against Feyenoord and was not involved in the win over Hearts on Sunday.
Maik Nawrocki is likely to remain out with a muscle issue but is close to a return. It is a similar story for another defender, Stephen Welsh.
In attack, Marco Tilio and Liel Abada will miss out.
Atletico Madrid
Atleti currently sit fourth in La Liga, having won seven matches from nine, with one draw and one defeat. They are three points off the top, however, have played a game fewer than their rivals after their match against Sevilla was postponed earlier in the season. Diego Simione’s side drew their opening Group E match 1-1 against Lazio in Rome.
Atletico are suffering from something of a crisis in defence, as Stefan Savic coming down with illness meant he missed the win over Celta last weekend and is rated as doubtful for Celtic. Jose Maria Gimenez and Reinildo are also both out, though Caglar Soyuncu returned to the squad at the weekend after over a month out.
Samuel Lino was substituted at half time against Celta with a knee injury and will join Memphis Depay and Thomas Lemar in the treatment room.
Prediction
With the greatest of respect to Celtic, Atletico Madrid may have a little too much for them. However, Celtic Park is an intimidating place for any team to visit so it might be worth going double chance on Atleti. We think a narrow win for Simeone’s team.
