Who Is Portugal Striker Gonçalo Ramos?

Gonçalo Ramos scored a hat-trick for Portugal in their 6-1 last 16 win against Switzerland.

Ramos also added an assist after replacing Cristiano Ronaldo in the starting XI for his first international start.

Portugal manager Fernando Santos had never previously named Ramos as a starter, with his three previous international caps coming as a substitute.

Ramos carried good form into the World Cup with nine goals in 11 league appearances for Benfica.

Ramos, nicknamed ‘The Wizard’, stands at 6’1, and utilises that size in his hold up play. He has drawn comparisons to Karim Benzema for his ability to drop deeper and create chances for others.

“Not even in my best dreams did I think I would be in the starting XI for the knockout phases,” said Ramos after his hat-trick.

Santos, following Ramos’ match-winning performance, said: “Goncalo is very dynamic and that’s what he ended up showing us.”
