French Open Preview

The French Open, also known as Roland-Garros, is the second of the four annual Grand Slam tennis tournaments. Scheduled to take place between Sunday May 28th and Sunday June 11th 2023, it follows the Australian Open and precedes Wimbledon and the US Open on the calendar. The tournament and venue are named after the French aviator Roland Garros.

The French Open is the number one  clay court championship in the world and the only Grand Slam tournament currently held on this surface. Until 1975, the French Open was the only major tournament not played on grass.

Due to the usual demand of Grand Slam tournaments and due to the surface, the French Open is regarded as the most physically demanding tennis tournament in the world.

French Open 2023 Outright Winner Odds

This year’s Roland Garros is shaping up to be one of the most interesting and open in the last two decades.

In the men’s singles 2022 champion Rafael Nadal, who has won the French Open a staggering 14 times, misses out through injury after struggling with fitness issues for over a year. As far as the women’s singels are concerned Iga Swaitek, a two-time winner, is not looking as dominant as last year. Therefore the winners are not easy to predict.

Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic are the top two in the men’s rankings, while after injury problems Swiatek’s status as WTA world number one has been challenged by Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina.

French Open 2023 Men’s Tournament

US Open Champion Carlos Alcazar is the bookie’s favourite to win the men’s singles. Alcazar made an excellent start to the clay season following up a tournament win in Barcelona by retaining his Madrid Open title. He did though suffer an early exit in the Italian Open in Rome. Novak Djokovic started 2023 superbly with a record extending Australian Open win in January and he is second favourite to win at Roland Garros. Djokovic’s form since then has been steady rather than spectacular, reaching the quarter-final stage of the Italian Open. Holger Rune and Daniil Medvedev cannot be ignored. Medvedev defeated Rune to win the Italian Open.

French Open Women’s Tournament

Iga Swaitek is the favourite to lift the women’s title, ahead of Aryna Sabalanka and Elena Rybakina. Sabalanka won the Madrid Open, defeating Swaitek in the final. However, she suffered an early exit in the Italian Open, Rybakina defeated Swaitek in the quarter-final and went on to win the tournament.
