Another competitive handicap hurdle, however, we feel that Faivoir could be the pick of the bunch. Won this off a mark of 3lb higher last year and ran very well into second in the Imperial Cup on the weekend. The Skelton team have been flying this week and they could well have another winner here.

Gidleigh Park looked like it was crying out for a longer trip when winning at the venue last time out, however, the progressive Readin Tommy Wrong can pick up the spoils for Paul Townend and Willie Mullins. He stayed on nicely to win at Naas and is hard to oppose here.

The pinnacle of national hunt racing is headed by Galopin Des Champs who dazzled over Christmas at Leapardstown and again looked good when winning the Irish Gold Cup at the Dublin Racing Festival. He is a strong favourite here, but is hard to back at even money. We are taking a chance with Fasterorslow. Although Galopin Des Champs turned the form around after being beaten twice by Fasterorslow last time, possibly the latter had an eye on today’s appointment. He was second at the Festival last year and looks a proper stayer. This stiffer test should suit him. Elsewhere, if you are looking for value, Gerri Colombe could well be in the mix and Jungle Boogie, ridden by in-form Rachel Blackmore, could be worth an each-way punt.

A competitive race to start the day, where you could make a case for the top four in the market.Facile Vega looks like he needs a longer trip and it’s breeding suggests it will prefer it. The Skletons had a brilliant day yesterday winning two of the handicaps and will be looking to win this race with Grey Dawning, who looked brilliant beating Apple Away last time out at Warwick. Ginny’s Destiny beat Grey Dawning over course and distance and has to be in with a shout. However, we are going to side with Iroko who impressed on his sole start this year. The winner of the Martin Pipe last year he is currently priced at 13/2, whoch represents good value.

Result:

  1. Grey Dawning
  2. Ginny’s Destiny
  3. Djelo

5. Iroko

  1. Protektorat

  3. Conflated

Teahupoo really should have won this race last year and our feeling is that with another year’s experience the seven-year-old will get the victory this time round. Many of the runners in this race have been great horses in the past, but are now on the way down and we don’t think that they will keep pace with Teahupoo.Crambo could only just fend off a 12-year-old Paisley Park last time and he will need to show a great improvement if he is to match the favourite.

Result:

  1. Teahupoo
  2. Flooring Porter
  3. Home By The Lee

Ballyburn is the hottest novice hurdler of the year and it had been a major talking point over which race he would eventually end up in. An excellent winner last time out at 2m at the Dublin Racing Festival and an emphatic winner of the 2.4 f race over Christmas at the same track makes him the one to beat here. Ile Atlantic could also go well under the colours of Tony Bloom.

Result:

  1. Ballyburn
  2. Jimmy Du Seuil
  3. Ile Atlantique

Another Mullins hotpot with Fact To File who has looked brilliant, and noises coming from the camp suggest he has the potential to be top class. There could be question marks over the distance, however, Mullins appears confident he can handle it. Stay Away Faye was a brilliant winnerat the Festival in the 3m Novices Chase last year and could go close.

Result:

  1. Fact To File
  2. Monty’s Star
  3. Giovonco

To round off the Mullins three-timer we are going for El Fabiolo. The winner of last year’s Arkle seems to have gone up yet another level this year. He looked brilliant at the Dublin Racing Festival. Jonbon was disappointing at the re-arranged Clarence House Chase at Cheltenham last time out and will have to find a bit extra to beat El Fabiolo.A front running performance from Edwardstone at Newbury last month seemed to suit him and, if he can produce that sort of performance, he could be a threat.

Result:

  1. Guinness Star
  2. Gentleman De Mee
  3. Funambule Sivola

El Fabiolo pulled up.

The Champion Bumper has become an open contest with maybe the top three bumper horses of the year missing from the race in Jeroboam Machin, Maurgheen and William Munny. We are going for another Mullins horse, but not his first string. You Oughta Know ran a huge race at Leopardstown after a long break. If he has progressed since then he could be right in the picture this time round.

Result:

  1. Jasmin De Vaux
  2. Romeo Coolio
  3. Jalon D’oudairies

This has been an open race since connections have sent Ballyburn to the Gallagher and therefore I will go for the beautifully bred Mystical Power. Impressive winner of the Moscow Flyer, a race won by both Douvan and Vautour won on the way to victory in the Supreme and, although his jumping isn-t the best, I feel that he could improve again to take this.

Result:

  1. Slade Steel
  2. Mystical Power
  3. Firefox

Meetingofthewaters was recently bought by J P McManus and has gone to the head of the market. However, Ireland have a terrible record in this race so I sm backing Chantio Classico, who was visually very impressive when winning at Ascot and when second at Kempton. His jumping is brilliant and he should have no issues with the trip. Kim Baily’s yard isn’t in the best of form, but I´ll take a chance with this one.

Result:

  1. Chianti Classico
  2. Twig
  3. Meetingofthewaters

15:30: The Champion Hurdle

Results:

  1. State Man
  2. Irish Point
  3. Luccia

16:10: Mayor’s Hurdle

Although this race is usually tricky for punters, we think that Bright Legend is at a nice price for each-way and, could could do the business. Second at Naas, a race whoch often produces a winner of this race, such as Jazzy Matty last year, or, Brazil the year before, he is rated 121 with a 3lb jockey claim. This means it will be running off a 9lb lower mark than the winner of that race, Eagles Fangand 8lbs lower than the 4th in that race, Nara. I think that this horse could really be open to some improvement and might have sneaked past the handicapper here at a good price.

Result:

  1. Lark in the Morning

11. Bright Legend

Cheltenham Festival Betting

Picking out your horses for the Cheltenham Festival is virtually the same as betting on a horse to win in any race, and it is best to stick to the same principles. However, with Cheltenham being such a high profile and high quality event it is arguably more satisfying to pick a winner! There are several things which punters need to be especially aware of.

1) Find the best Cheltenham trainers

While Cheltenham Festival winners come from up and down the country, there are some trainers who seem to excel at bringing their horses to a peak for this event. So do some research and focus on the yards who have an excellent record at this meeting. Currently Willie Mullins, Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls are three of the trainers who always seem to have their top horses in form at the Gloucestershire showpiece.

2) Find the best Cheltenham jockeys

Equally you get jockeys who seem suited to certain courses and Cheltenham is no exception. As well as handling the course, jockeys who consistently perform well at Cheltenham are capable of performing on the big occasion.  Rachael Blackmore, Paul Townend, Harry Cobden, Harry Skelton, Nico de Boinville and Bryony Frost are all worth watching out for.

In the big handicaps races keep an eyeout for conditional jockeys. These are less experienced riders who are developing their skills and, due to their inexperience, they can claim up to 7lbs off a horse’s weight. Some trainers, who have faith in their conditionals, like to use them in closely matched handicap races where they feel that the weight difference will be crucial.

3) Monitor form

This is key when betting on any race and it is worth looking at the horse who come into Cheltenham in good form when making your selection. However, like in all races, an out of form horse, or a horse returning from injury or coming off a break can win. With Cheltenham being such a big event, some trainers may prefer to race their horses sparingly in the weeks before the race and may be confident of them coming into the festival in peak condidtion.

 4) Keep an eye on shifts in the markets

The Cheltenham Festival betting markets are fluid and competitive, with odds frequently fluctuating. The price on a horse can shorten or lengthen at any time. Look out for horses who prove popular among other punters, especially if their odds start to come down.

5) Use opinions of pundits and tipsters in your research

Read up on what the experts think about trainers, jockeys and horses you may want to back.

6) Study the odds

Study the best Cheltenham Festival betting sites and compare bookies in order to find the best quality odds in order to maximise any potential winnings.

7) Use offers and bonuses to your advantage

There are always a lot of offers and promos aimed at the Cheltenham Festival among the best betting sites in the UK. Try to find an offer or bonus that suits you in the build up to the big week.

8) Check out the best Cheltenham Festival betting sites

At Betting.com we have comprehensive top lists of the best betting sites in the UK and the best bookmakers for horse racing and the Cheltenham Festival.

As the build up to Cheltenham continues we will bring you news of the main contenders and will bring you any other stand out offers. Always remember to gamble responsibly.
