Relegation Battle: Blades demotion confirmed, Toffees and Bees safe
Sheffield United’s relegation was confirmed with a 5-1 defeat to Newcastle United. Everton’s win over Brentford confirmed Premier League survival for Sean Dyche’s side, despite suffering a further points deduction heading into the run-in. Their opponents also find themeselves mathematically safe.
Burnley continued their recent improvement in form, with a creditable draw at Old Trafford against Manchester United. They have the best recent form out of the current candidates, however, have an inferior goal difference to Luton Town, who they trail by a point and Nottingham Forest, who are a further point ahead.
The pending appeals by Everton and Nottingham Forest regarding their point deductions further complicate the situation, with the outcome potentially shaping the relegation battle significantly.
Premier League relegation odds
The odds on teams being relegated and on teams staying up are in the following table:
To be relegated | Not to be relegated | |
Burnley | 1/7 | 9/2 |
Luton Town | 1/5 | 7/2 |
Nottingham Forest | 7/4 | 2/5 |
So, as the Premier League relegation battle takes shape heading into the final six or seven fixtures, here is a breakdown of where each team stands:
Burnley:
Burnley still have a chance to stay up. However, they must improve their performances at home and secure crucial points in the upcoming matches. They have the best current form out of the remaining candidates with three draws, including Saturday’s point at Old Trafford, a win and a loss in their last five games. However, an inferior goal difference and the fact that they are a point behind Luton and two behind Forest makes them favourites to go down.
Luton Town:
Luton have demonstrated resiliance throughout the season, however, a poor recent run with four losses and a win in their last five matches have greatly reduced their survival chances.
Nottingham Forest:
Forest faced a setback due to a points deduction but showed signs of improvement in their recent win over Fulham. Their loss to Everton means that they are still in deep trouble. However, a sprited performance against Manchester City, despite a 2-0 loss, gives them hope.
Premier League Predictions: Relegation
The last time all three promoted teams were relegated from the Premier League was season 1997/98 when Barnsley, Bolton and Crystal Palace all went down, the only time this has happened in the Premier League era. There is a strong chance of this happening this season as all three have struggled to bridge the gap between the Championship and the top flight. Sheffield United are already relegated after losing at St James’ Park at the weekend. Luton look the most likely of the three to survive in the middles section of the season, however, it is possible that they adjusted to the Premier League too late to be able to gather enough points to stay up, especially in the face of their recent poor run. Burnley have put together a decent run, with six points from their last five matches to give themselves a fighting chance.
This issue is, however, further clouded by the points deductions Everton and Nottingham Forest have suffered, meaning that things might not be resolved until late May, long after the final ball of the season has been kicked. However, we feel that, all things being equal, it will be Burnley and Luton Town who will be playing in the Championship alongside already relegated Sheffield United next season.
Betting tip: Burnley and Luton Town to be relegated alongside already relegated Sheffield United.
