Turkey – Euro 2024 Overview

Turkey have developed into a respected football nation. At club level, teams such as Besiktas, Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe have excelled n European competition, while the national team has reached the semi-finals of Euro 2008 and won bronze at the World Cup 2002. Familiar names such as Hakan Şükür and Arda Turan have contributed to the country’s success.

However, the national team has experienced a difficult period recently. However, Turkey finished ahead of Croatia to win their qualifying group, and this, along with some promising Nations League performances, suggest that things may be on the up for the Turks. Overall the future of Turkish football looks promising with continued investments being made in youth development, which is expected to keep the country competitive both at club and national team level for a number of years.

Turkey, were drawn in Group F with the Czech Republic , Portugal and the playoff winners from Path C. Italian Vincenzo Montella has been in charge since 2023. During his coaching career, Montella has been at several Serie A clubs such as Milan and Sampdoria. The last club side he coached was Adana Demirspor in the Turkish top league.

How Turkey qualified for the Euro 2024

Turkey qualified for the Euro 2024 finals in Germany by winning their European Championship qualifying group ahead of Croatia , Wales, Armenia and Latvia. They recorded five wins, two draws and one defeat, scoring 14 goals and conceding seven. The Turks dropped points in the home and away ties against Croatia and away to Wales.

The team’s 14 goals were scored by twelve different players, deonstrating that they are a team who can share the goals around. Kerem Aktürkoğlu and Cenk Tosun were joint top scorers with two goals each.

The Turkish Euro 2024 squad consists mostly of players from Süper Lig, Turkey’s top domestic league. • Burak Yılmaz – A striker with solid experience and an ability to perform at a high level under pressure both for his club Lille and for Turkey. His ability to find the net, combined with his leadership make him a key player who inspires teammates and poses a threat to opponents.

Portugal are the clear group favourite. But Turkey’s chances of reaching the round of 16 are very good and they will be looking to go beyond that. They are outsiders for the tournament as a whole.
