Slovenia – Euro 2024 Overview

The Slovenia men’s national football team, may not be the most talked about of international sides, however, they are respected as a well organised team who have produced some very good players down the years, including attacking midfielder Zlatko Zahovič and goalkeeper Samir Handanović.

Slovenia have achieved some success on the international stage, qualifying for several international tournaments such as the Euros. Their best and only performance in the European Championship finals came in 2000 when they reached the quarter-finals.

Looking ahead, Slovenia are continuing to develop their national team and seek new talent to strengthen their position in international football. With a strong team ethic and a growing talent pool, Slovenia can continue compete on the global and European stage.

In Euro 2024 Slovenia have been drawn against England, Denmark and Serbia in Group C. All three nations are ranked higher than the Slovenians. However, as Denmark, who were in the same qualification group as Slovenia, will testify, they are well organised, hard to break down and capable of causing an upset.

How Slovenia qualified for Euro 2024

Slovenia placed second in European Championship qualifying group H behind Denmark, despite having the same number of points and better goal difference than the Danes. Denmark, however, were better in the head-to-head meetings, which placed them at the top of the group.  In 10 matches, Slovenia won seven, drew one and lost two, scoring 20 and conceding nine. Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško top scored for the Slovenians in qualifying with five goals.

Slovenia’s European Championship squad

Slovenia’s European Championship squad may not be packed with superstars, but they are techically and tactically good and are well drilled. They are greater than the sum of their parts. Atletico Madrid’s goalkeeper Jan Oblak is their brightest star and an experienced international. Oblak is just part of the reason for his country’s strong defence. Petar Stojanović, Jaka Bijol and Miha Blažič are solid defenders.

The experienced Jasmin Kurtić is still a key man and the attack is given a cutting edge by the young and promising Šeško and Andraž Šporar of Panathinaikos.

Matjaž Kek is in his seventh year in charge of the Slovenian national side and is known to be a coach who has his teams well drilled and set up to be solid. They are hard to break down, however, when in possession they can find ways to hurt teams.

Kek’s flexibility and adaptability allow him to adapt to different opponents and situations, while prioritising the development of young talent within his team. By integrating these principles, Kek has managed to achieve success as a coach at both national and international levels. Before taking over the Slovenian national team, he was the head coach of Rijeka and before that Al-Ittihad.

• Jan Oblak – Oblak is one of the world’s best goalkeepers known for exceptional positioning, quick reflexes and composure under pressure. His ability to make important saves and his authority and command of his area on make him vitally important for both his club Atlético Madrid and the Slovenian national team.
• Benjamin Šeško – The Leipzig forward excels with his impressive physique and ability in the air, making him a useful player in both defence and attack. Despite his size, he displays impressive technical prowess, making him a versatile and dangrerous forward.
• Petar Stojanović – Experienced defender who is solid in defence and contributes to the team’s attacking play from right-back. Combining an impressive work ethic with technical prowess, Stojanović is a reliable and effective presence.

Slovenia Odds at Euro 2024

Slovenia are considered outsiders to qualify from Group C and major outsiders to win the group. They are huge outsiders to win the tournament. However, they are difficult to break down and will be no pushovers.
